The Australian crime comedy Deadloch landed on Prime Video in 2023 and quickly gained a global following. The show’s setting plays a huge role in its mood, with the fictional town of Deadloch feeling like a real place. The series was filmed across southern Tasmania, using real towns and buildings to create its unique atmosphere. As season two shifts the action to Australia’s Northern Territory, now is the perfect time to look back at the locations that made the first season so memorable.

The Real Places Behind the Fictional Town of Deadloch

The town of Deadloch does not exist in real life. The production team built it by filming in several locations around Tasmania. Most of the street scenes and the town’s main buildings were captured in Cygnet, a small town in the Huon Valley about a 45-minute drive south of Hobart.

The main street of Deadloch is actually Cygnet’s main road. The exterior of the Bush Wolf Hotel was filmed at the Cygnet Old Bank, a Victorian-style building from 1909 that now operates as a bed and breakfast. Right across the road, the Deadloch Police Station exterior is Carmel Hall, a community hall that also hosts the Cygnet Market on the first and third Sunday of each month. The Deadloch Pub scenes were shot at the Commercial Hotel Cygnet, a working pub just down the street.

Even the Beast Factory Gym, where a key character worked, was filmed in a building next to the Cygnet Old Bank.

Hobart’s Role in the Series

While the city of Hobart is mentioned throughout the show, it serves more as a backdrop for interiors rather than a primary filming location. The fancy Bush Wolf hotel rooms where Eddie Redcliffe stayed were filmed inside the Henry Jones Art Hotel, a real heritage hotel in Hobart that guests can book.

The Feastival opening sequence was shot at Lark Distillery on the Hobart waterfront, a real distillery known for Tasmanian whisky. For the police work scenes, the exterior of the pathology lab was filmed at the University of Tasmania’s Chemistry Building on the Sandy Bay campus.

The Coastline and Other Key Locations

The rugged Tasmanian coastline provides much of the show’s visual style. The beach where the first body is discovered is Kingston Dog Beach, a popular local spot south of Hobart. The floating cinema scene was filmed at the Snug Beach boat ramp, and the town wharf scenes were captured at Dunalley Public Jetty on the Tasman Peninsula.

Richmond, one of Tasmania’s most historic towns, also appears in the series. The Deadloch Cemetery scenes were filmed at St Luke’s Anglican Cemetery, and the Carruthers Estate is Prospect Country House, a colonial building that offers luxury accommodation. The Deadloch Football Club scenes were shot at the Richmond Football Club.

The swimming pool scenes were filmed at the New Norfolk Swimming Pool, a town about 30 minutes from Hobart.

What to Know About Season 2’s Location Change

For viewers interested in the show’s future, season two has moved to a completely different setting. Production for the second season began in September 2024, with filming taking place in Darwin and the Northern Territory before moving to Brisbane, Queensland.

The official Amazon press release confirmed that the new season is set in Darwin, where detectives Dulcie Collins and Eddie Redcliffe investigate the death of Eddie’s former policing partner. This shift means the show’s atmosphere will change from Tasmania’s moody coastlines to the heat and humidity of Australia’s Top End.

Luke Hemsworth joined the cast for season two, playing a character named Jason Wade, who runs a wildlife park. Season two is scheduled to release on March 20, 2026.

For fans who want to visit the original filming locations, all the spots mentioned above are open to the public. The Henry Jones Art Hotel and Prospect Country House offer accommodation, while the Cygnet Market runs twice monthly at Carmel Hall.
