Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown has pleaded not guilty to two additional charges related to a 2023 nightclub incident in London. The 36-year-old artist denied assault causing actual bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon during a hearing at Southwark Crown Court on July 11, 2025.
The case involves an alleged attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at the Tape nightclub in Mayfair in February 2023. Prosecutors claim Brown struck Diaw with a bottle in what they describe as an “unprovoked” assault.
Details of the Court Hearing
Brown appeared in court wearing a light brown suit and dark-rimmed glasses. Around 20 fans attended the hearing, with some shouting “We love you, Chris” as he left. His co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu (also known as rapper HoodyBaby), also pleaded not guilty to causing actual bodily harm.
The singer had previously denied a more serious charge of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) last month. The trial is set for October 26, 2026, and is expected to last five to seven days.
“The alleged attack was caught on surveillance camera in front of a club full of people,” prosecutors stated.
Bail Conditions and Tour Plans
Brown was arrested in May 2025 at Manchesterโs Lowry Hotel after returning to the UK for his Breezy Bowl XX tour. He spent nearly a week in custody before being released on ยฃ5 million (around $6.7 million) bail.
As part of his bail conditions, Brown must:
- Surrender his passport when not traveling for concerts.
- Stay at a UK address while awaiting trial.
- Return to court for future hearings.
Despite the legal case, Brown has continued his tour, performing in Europe and preparing for North American shows starting in late July 2025.
Background of the Incident
The alleged assault took place at Tape nightclub, a high-end venue in Mayfair, on February 19, 2023. Prosecutors say Diaw was standing at the bar when Brown hit him multiple times with a bottle. The altercation reportedly continued in another part of the club, where Brown and Akinlolu allegedly punched and kicked Diaw.
“He is accused of striking the victim several times with a bottle before chasing him across the bar,” a court official said.
Legal and Career Implications
Brown, a two-time Grammy winner, has faced legal issues in the past, including a 2009 assault case involving singer Rihanna. His legal team has suggested they may argue self-defense in the current case.
The singerโs Breezy Bowl XX tour includes stops in Miami, Toronto, and other US cities. His team has not commented on whether the trial will affect his tour schedule.
Civil Lawsuit Dismissed
In October 2023, Diaw filed a civil lawsuit against Brown over the alleged attack. However, the case was dismissed with prejudice in June 2025, meaning it cannot be refiled. No settlement details have been confirmed.
Fan Reactions and Public Response
Fans have shown support for Brown on social media, with many expressing belief in his innocence. Others have criticized his history of legal troubles.
“FROM THE CAGE TO THE STAGE!!! BREEZYBOWL,” Brown posted on Instagram after his release from custody.
The next court hearing is scheduled for October 24, 2025.
