The new crime drama M.I.A. is doing something unusual in the TV world. The show will first arrive on Peacock for streaming, then just one week later, its pilot episode will air on traditional NBC television. This move goes against the normal pattern where shows air on broadcast TV first before heading to streaming services.

M.I.A. comes from Bill Dubuque, one of the creators behind the hit show Ozark. The series got a straight-to-series order from Peacock in 2024, meaning it skipped the usual pilot testing phase. Now the show is making news again because of its uncommon release strategy.

What is M.I.A. About?

The story follows a young woman named Etta Tiger Jonze, played by Shannon Gisela. She lives in the Florida Keys but dreams of a bigger life in Miami. Her family runs a drug business, but everything falls apart after a terrible event. Etta then goes on a dangerous path through Miamiโ€™s criminal world. This journey forces her to figure out who she really is and what she can do.

The first season trailer shows that most of Ettaโ€™s family gets killed. She becomes set on getting revenge. She must find and kill 12 men responsible for the crime. These men are also hunting her down. Two new friends join her side Lovely (played by Brittany Adebumola) and Stanley (played by Dylan Jackson). Their characters show the mix of Latino and Haitian communities in Miami.

Who Stars in the Cast

M.I.A. has a strong group of actors. Besides Shannon Gisela in the lead role, the series includes:

  • Cary Elwes (known for Saw)
  • Danay Garcia (from Fear the Walking Dead)
  • Brittany Adebumola
  • Dylan Jackson
  • Alberto Guerra (from Griselda)
  • Maurice Compte (from Den of Thieves)
  • Gerardo Celasco
  • Marta Milans

The guest cast also brings in big names like Edward James Olmos, Billy Burke, Sonia Braga, Loretta Devine, and Tovah Feldshuh.

Release Dates and Streaming Details

M.I.A. will drop all nine episodes on Peacock on May 7, 2026. Each episode runs for 60 minutes. This binge model means viewers can watch the whole first season at once.

Then on May 14, 2026, NBC will air the pilot episode as a special telecast at 10 p.m. ET/PT. This is just one week after the show becomes available for streaming.

For viewers in different regions:

  • USA: Available on Peacock (May 7) and NBC (May 14)
  • UK: Information on UK broadcast partners is coming
  • Canada: Distribution details to be confirmed
  • Australia: Release plans not yet announced
  • India: Streaming availability details pending

The show is produced by MRC and distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Why This Release Strategy is Different

Most new TV shows follow a clear path. They air on broadcast networks first. Then episodes become available on streaming services later. M.I.A. flips this order. The series comes to Peacock first, then moves to NBC for broadcast.

This two-platform approach is rare for scripted dramas. Peacock and NBC both fall under NBCUniversal. The company owns both the streaming service and the broadcast network. By moving M.I.A. from streaming to TV so quickly, the show gets attention from two different audiences.

The short time between releases means viewers have choices. Streaming fans can watch the whole season early. Traditional TV viewers can catch the pilot on NBC. People who see the NBC broadcast might then go to Peacock to watch the remaining episodes.

Behind the Scenes Team

Bill Dubuque created M.I.A. and serves as writer and executive producer. He co-created Ozark, one of Netflixโ€™s biggest shows. Karen Campbell works as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Alethea Jones directs the first two episodes and also serves as executive producer.

Other directors for the season include Gwyneth Horder-Payton, Marizee Almas, Ben Semanoff, and John Dahl. This team brings experience from major shows like Dexter, Raised by Wolves, and The Accountant 2.

What Viewers Can Expect

The show carries a crime drama revenge thriller tone. It focuses on a young woman pushed into a violent world after losing her family. The Miami setting plays a big role, with the cityโ€™s neon-lit streets and mix of cultures shaping the story.

With Bill Dubuque behind the series, many viewers expect the same quality writing found in Ozark. The show received a straight-to-series order based on its strength, without needing a pilot to prove itself first.

First Season Details

The first season contains nine episodes. All of them will be available for streaming on May 7. The show marks Dubuqueโ€™s second series since Ozark. He also created the docuseries Ozark Law and wrote the script for The Accountant 2.

M.I.A. extends the partnership between Paramount Global Content Distribution and MRC. These two companies previously worked together on shows like The Great and Poker Face.
