The fourth season of Dark Winds just wrapped up, and it left viewers with more than a few unresolved threads. One of the biggest talking points is the fate of Dominic McNair, the ruthless crime boss played by Titus Welliver. The actor, famous for playing Harry Bosch, has now made it very clear that he is ready and willing to return for Dark Winds Season 5. He wants to finish what his character started.

McNair entered the picture in Season 4 as a major problem for Zahn McClarnon’s character, Joe Leaphorn. He is a Los Angeles-based criminal dealing in stolen goods and drugs. By the end of the season, McNair found himself behind bars facing a murder charge, but he also made it known he has a score to settle with Leaphorn.

This open ending left the door wide open for a comeback. Now, Welliver is speaking out about his hopes to walk through that door when the show returns in 2027.

The ‘Bosch’ Star Pushes for a Return to AMC

Titus Welliver isn’t waiting by the phone. He is actively telling the show’s creators that he wants back in. In a recent interview, the actor revealed he approached showrunner John Wirth directly.

“I went to John and I went, ‘I want to come back.’ After my last day of work, when we shot those final scenes, ‘It feels very open-ended. So just know that all you got to do is pick up the phone, and I’ll be there.’”

Welliver explained that he loves the world of the show and the character. He admitted he is “pretty shameless” when it comes to pushing for roles he enjoys. While he confirmed that nothing is officially on the books for Dark Winds Season 5 yet, his enthusiasm is hard to ignore.

“Honestly, there’s nothing on the books at this moment, but that being said, I would welcome it and would run back in a heartbeat.”

Why Dominic McNair’s Story Isn’t Finished Yet

The Season 4 finale did not close the book on McNair. Instead, it set up a perfect reason for him to come back. The crime boss is currently challenging his murder charge. At the same time, other characters are working behind the scenes to manipulate his trial.

If McNair gets out of prison, he will likely come looking for Leaphorn. The two men have a personal conflict now. Welliver thinks this creates a great opportunity for Season 5.

He mentioned that it would be “a tremendous amount of fun” to see what happens if McNair gets released. The actor believes the audience would be very interested in watching that conflict play out. It would bring a strong villain back into the lives of the Navajo Tribal Police.

Production Status of Dark Winds Season 5

While Welliver’s return is still just a hope for now, the show itself is definitely moving forward. AMC gave Dark Winds an early renewal for a fifth season. The decision came before the fourth season even started airing back in February 2026.

Filming for the new episodes began in Santa Fe, New Mexico in March 2026. Zahn McClarnon is not only returning as Leaphorn but is also directing an episode in the upcoming season. The network has confirmed that Dark Winds Season 5 will consist of eight episodes.

New Cast Members Joining the 1970s Drama

Even if Welliver returns, he will be joining a lot of new faces. The cast for Season 5 is growing with some notable additions.

Paola Núñez has joined as a series regular. She will play Luisa Alvarado, a lead investigator for the U.S. Attorney’s office who has a connection to Leaphorn’s past. Martin Sensmeier will play Terry Bai, a former Vietnam War veteran with ties to Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon).

The show has also added Noel Fisher, known for Shameless, in a recurring role. He will play Michael Jorie, a dangerous killer involved with a violent gang.

When and Where to Watch

Fans will have to wait a bit longer to see if McNair returns to the reservation. Dark Winds Season 5 is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2027. An exact date has not been set yet.

For those who want to catch up, the first three seasons are streaming on AMC+ and through the AMC Collection on Netflix. The series remains a popular crime drama for its unique setting and character-driven stories.
