The project was first announced in 2022 with David Harbour and Pedro Pascal attached to star . By October 2024, the creative direction had shifted. Pascal was no longer involved, and Jason Bateman joined the cast. The story also moved away from its initial inspirationโa New Yorker article by James Lasdunโto become an original idea .
