The third season of House of the Dragon has arrived with a historic bang, featuring a premiere episode that showrunner Ryan Condal says includes a sequence “unlike anything that’s ever been done in television before.” The new season, which debuted on June 21 on HBO and Max, opens with the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet, a naval engagement that production sources confirm set a world record by igniting 23 stunt performers simultaneously in a single take.
Record-Breaking Stunt Work and Production Scale
The production team for House of the Dragon Season 3 pulled out all the stops for its opening episode. During a panel at the SXSW London festival, producers revealed that the Battle of the Gullet sequence required an enormous logistical effort. The production used 15,000 stunt crowd participants, 3,500 props, and 25 tons of propane to film the battle.
Director Loni Peristere, who helmed the premiere, explained that he wanted to return to what “epic means for battles at sea.” He drew inspiration from historical paintings like the Battle of Trafalgar and films such as “Master and Commander.” The crew built two full-scale ships on gimbals and used four ship sets across wet, dry, and underwater tanks, filled with more than three million litres of water.
“I will confidently say is unlike anything that’s ever been done in television before,” Condal said at the panel, comparing the scale of the battle sequence to the Battle of Helm’s Deep from “The Lord of the Rings.” “We had to dramatize it, we had to show it.”
The Battle’s Impact and Character Deaths
The Battle of the Gullet serves as a major turning point in the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons. The episode features the death of Jacaerys ‘Jace’ Velaryon (Harry Collett), Rhaenyra’s eldest son, who is struck by arrows from a rival ship. Collett spoke with Variety about the difficulty of filming the scene, describing how his character never expects to die even after losing his dragon.
Peristere noted that the sequence was designed to be a “living, breathing life of a ship” that feels grounded in reality despite the fantasy setting. The physical conditions on set were dangerous, with actor Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) describing slippery floors covered in fake blood. Weeks of choreography and rehearsals were required before filming began.
New Cast Members Join the Fray
Season 3 introduces several new faces to Westeros, expanding the show’s ensemble to include what Condal has said will be 19 point-of-view characters.
James Norton (“Happy Valley”) joins as Ser Ormund Hightower, the head of House Hightower and nephew of Otto Hightower. Condal has reportedly compared the character to “the Tywin Lannister of this world,” describing him as a wealthy leader with a large army and a dragon.
Tommy Flanagan (“Sons of Anarchy”) portrays Ser Roderick Dustin, the battle-scarred Lord of Barrowton who leads a northern army known as the Winter Wolves. Dan Fogler (“Fantastic Beasts”) plays Ser Torrhen Manderly, a charismatic knight from the north. Tom Cullen (“Downton Abbey”) appears as Ser Luthor Largent, commander of the City Watch.
Other new additions include Joplin Sibtain as Ser Jon Roxton, a knight wielding the Valyrian steel sword Orphan-maker; Barry Sloane as Ser Adrian Redfort of Rhaenyra’s Queensguard; and Annie Shapero as Alysanne Blackwood, a legendary fighter for Queen Rhaenyra.
Returning cast members include Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen), Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower), Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower), Ewan Mitchell (Aemond Targaryen), and Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon II Targaryen).
