“We’ve certainly talked about it — talked about a plan. [Hulu] has a sense of where we’d like to take it,” Waldron told The Hollywood Reporter. “Ultimately, we have to see how the show performs, but everybody knows Glen and I want to see this thing through to the end.”

The season finale, titled “6th Quarter,” ended at a pivotal moment. Russ Holliday, having been exposed by Ricky, confesses his true identity to her just before the big game. However, instead of forgiving him, Ricky is furious. Russ then blackmails her into keeping his secret to protect her father’s coaching career, showing that he still has a long way to go in his personal growth.
The decision to end the season right as the team runs onto the field was intentional. Waldron explained that the core story of the finale was Ricky discovering the truth, not the outcome of the game. This creates a compelling reason for audiences to return for a potential second season, which would likely pick up immediately after these events.
“We wanted the audience to have a reason to come back for more, and we felt like the finale was the story of Ricky finding out the truth,” Waldron said. “So that was the important story there, not what happens in the Georgia game.”
Waldron and Powell have often discussed Breaking Bad as a model for the show, aiming to follow the consequences of a lie in real time. Their original plan has always been to follow one college football season across multiple television seasons, envisioning a story that could span about three seasons in total.
What to Expect in a Potential Season 2
If renewed, Season 2 would continue to follow Russ/Chad through the football season, diving deeper into the fallout of his secret. With Ricky now pulled into the conspiracy, their dynamic will be a central focus. The creative team has hinted that the tone of the show will continue to balance comedy with the very real consequences of Russ’s actions.
Glen Powell, a University of Texas at Austin alumnus and avid Longhorns fan, has publicly shared his desire to feature his alma mater in a future season.
“If we get a Season 2… I will definitely be showing the Texas Longhorns,” Powell said. “The Catfish will definitely be playing the Longhorns somewhere in Season 2.”
Michael Waldron has also expressed interest in incorporating other major college football programs like Alabama and LSU, as well as real-life sports figures such as coaches Kirby Smart and Lane Kiffin, and former player Jameis Winston.
When Could Season 2 Premiere?
While there is no official release date for a second season, Michael Waldron has indicated that if the show is renewed, the team would not want to keep fans waiting long. He suggested that a potential Season 2 could arrive around the same time the following year, which would point to a possible release in October 2026.
The main cast, including Glen Powell, Perry Mattfeld, and Steve Zahn, is expected to return for the new season.
