The relationship between Billy Butcher and Ryan has always been complicated on The Boys. But the latest episodes of Season 5 show just how far the former Boys leader has fallen. Eric Kripke, the creator of the show, recently opened up about where these two characters stand right now and what Butcher’s true intentions are for the young supe.
Warning: Major spoilers for The Boys Season 5, Episode 3 ahead.
Season 5 Episode 3, which dropped on Prime Video on April 15, 2026, brought Ryan back into the main story. The character played by Cameron Crovetti had been hiding out in Russia for the first two episodes. When he returns to the United States, he meets up with Butcher, and things go downhill very fast.
Butcher’s Shocking Request To Ryan Explained By Eric Kripke
The scene between Butcher and Ryan at the bar is quiet and almost friendly at first. Butcher speaks to Ryan with what seems like care and warmth. But the request he makes is horrifying. He tells Ryan that he wants the boy to go face Homelander so that Butcher can use the Supe Virus to kill his father. Ryan would be bait in a trap that would likely get him killed.
Kripke spoke with ScreenRant about this moment and did not try to soften what Butcher was doing.
“Yeah, I think he’s serious about it. I think that conversation he has with Ryan at the bar is chilling because it’s delivered with such warmth and sympathy, but he’s asking the kid to be a suicide bomber.” – Eric Kripke
The showrunner explained that this version of Butcher is not trying to lie or manipulate anyone. He is just telling the truth directly. But that truth is that a child needs to die for Butcher to get what he wants. Ryan is too young and too eager to prove himself to understand what he is being asked to do.
Kripke added that Ryan simply does not have the maturity to handle a request like that. The show proves this point when Ryan goes to fight Homelander and nearly dies.
Will Butcher Sacrifice Ryan Again Without Hesitation?
After Homelander beats Ryan badly and leaves him barely alive, Butcher shows up at the end of the episode. He finds Ryan on the ground and places a tracker in his coat. There is a small moment where Butcher seems to feel regret for what he has done.
But Kripke made it very clear that this regret does not matter in the bigger picture. The showrunner said that if Butcher had the virus and needed Ryan to do the same thing again, he would do it without thinking twice. He would feel bad about it, but those feelings would not stop him from taking action.
“I just think it’s messy and complicated. When Butcher shows up at the end, he does have feelings and regret for what he’s put Ryan through, but I think that’s a small spark in a hurricane. I think, were he to do it again… If he has the virus and needs Ryan to do it again, he would do it without hesitation. He’d feel bad, but I don’t think that would stop any of his actions. Which is, of course, what matters.” – Eric Kripke
This answer shows that Butcher has crossed a line he cannot come back from. The character who once promised Becca that he would keep Ryan safe is now willing to let that same boy die to kill Homelander.
Breaking The Cycle Of Violence In Episode 3
Episode 3 of The Boys Season 5 focuses heavily on the idea of children paying for the actions of their parents. Kripke told ScreenRant that the writers wanted to explore the cycle of violence through three young characters: Ryan, Zoe Neuman, and Maverick.
Kripke pointed to real world conflicts when explaining this theme. He said that when the only move is to destroy a group of people, their children will always want revenge. That cycle just continues forever. The show wanted to ask whether any of these young characters could walk away from that path.
Only one of the three succeeded. Zoe chose to leave with her father Sameer Shah instead of seeking revenge against Butcher for killing her mother Victoria Neuman. Kripke called this a happy ending by the show’s standards. But Ryan and Maverick both stayed trapped in the cycle, with terrible results.

What This Means For Butcher Going Forward
Kripke had already hinted before Season 5 that Butcher had accepted his dark fate. In a previous interview, he explained that Butcher held onto his humanity mostly because of Ryan. Once that connection broke, Butcher had no reason to stay good.
The Season 5 Episode 3 conversation proves that Butcher is now fully committed to his mission no matter the cost. He is no longer the anti-hero who sometimes did the right thing. He has become exactly what he always hated.
