Noah Centineo recently shared a wild story about how he lost a major role in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar to Timothée Chalamet. The actor appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and admitted he “ruined” his audition for the film. Instead of preparing for the scene, Centineo got distracted by a swimming pool on the set and ended up swimming with a friend. The role of Tom Cooper eventually went to Chalamet, who was 17 at the time of filming. Centineo’s confession has quickly become a hot topic among fans, showing that even big stars have unforgettable audition disasters.
Noah Centineo Auditioned for Tom Cooper Role in Interstellar
The To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before star confirmed that he tried out for the part of Tom Cooper, the son of Matthew McConaughey’s character Joseph Cooper. Centineo said he went through several rounds of auditions and was told he was a favorite. The casting team even told him they found him “incredible”. Despite their positive feedback, Centineo never got the role. He accepted the rejection as a normal part of being an actor. Chalamet, who was relatively unknown at the time, landed the part and later became one of Hollywood’s most sought-after stars.
Centineo described his audition experience as “hilarious and dumb as hell”. He mentioned that his audition was with Jatin Wolf. The actor recalled how the process kept moving forward, with the crew putting him through multiple rounds. However, everything changed when he arrived at the filming compound.
Actor Got Distracted by Pool During Audition
Centineo brought his childhood friend Aviad Bernstein to the audition. The two had known each other for 15 years and often went to auditions together. When they arrived at the compound, Bernstein noticed a pool and told Centineo, “There’s a pool in this place. You should come with me”. The compound had tall concrete walls and a large metal gate. Inside, there was a spotless pool with a pool house and casting associates nearby.
Centineo asked a casting associate if swimming was allowed. She explained that no one had ever used the pool but confirmed that towels were available. Without thinking twice, Centineo and Bernstein changed their clothes and jumped into the water. Instead of focusing on the script, the two spent their time swimming. Centineo later learned from another actor that their behavior had disrupted the entire audition process for everyone waiting in line.
“I auditioned for Timothée Chalamet’s role in Interstellar… And ruined it. I did it so bad.”

Centineo admitted that he completely lost focus after seeing the pool. He said he “ruined it” and did a terrible job during the actual audition. The actor shared this story with honesty, showing that even after becoming famous, he can laugh at his past mistakes. He described the whole situation as a learning experience.
The role of Tom Cooper in Interstellar was small but significant. Chalamet played the teenage version of Cooper’s son. The film, directed by Christopher Nolan, became a massive sci-fi hit and is still loved by fans today. Chalamet later revealed that he “wept for an hour” after finding out his scenes were cut down in the final version of the movie. Despite the reduced screen time, Interstellar remained his favorite film.
