The Greenville County Coroner’s Office has released new information about the death of actor Hayden Panettiere. The 36-year-old star, known for her roles in “Heroes” and “Nashville,” was found unresponsive on August 16, 2026, at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina. The coroner’s office completed an autopsy and shared findings that rule out physical trauma as a contributing factor.
911 Call and Emergency Response Timeline
The coroner’s office provided a detailed timeline of the emergency response. On August 16, 2026, at approximately 1:51 PM, a 911 call was received about a reported cardiac arrest. First responders and Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene and found Panettiere in cardiac arrest.
EMS personnel started advanced cardiac life support measures, but their efforts to revive her did not work. The actor was pronounced deceased at 2:32 PM. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office and the Greenville City Police Department both responded to the scene.
The coroner’s office identified the decedent as Hayden Lesley Panettiere, 36, of California. She had been temporarily staying at the residence where she was found. Dispatch audio obtained by Page Six captured responders mentioning a possible “overdose” around the time of the call, with confirmation that CPR was in progress on an unidentified female in cardiac arrest.
Autopsy Findings: No Signs of Trauma
The autopsy was completed on Monday, August 17. Coroner Mike Ellis released a statement saying that no signs of trauma were found that would have contributed to Panettiere’s death.
“An autopsy was completed today. At autopsy no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death.”
The coroner’s office also stated that the cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies. This includes toxicology reports that are still being processed. The investigation remains active and ongoing, and officials said they cannot share further details at this time.
No Signs of Foul Play
Police have stated that the preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. The Greenville Police Department confirmed that officers and EMS responded to reports of an unresponsive female around 1:50 PM local time on Sunday. Medical assistance was given, but Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether a medical condition, substance-related issue, or another factor caused Panettiere’s death. Reports indicate that Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, was discovered inside the South Carolina apartment where she died. However, officials have not officially identified an overdose as the cause.
Hayden Panettiere’s Career and Legacy
Panettiere began her acting career as a child. She appeared in commercials and had a four-year run as Sarah Roberts on “One Life to Live” from 1994 to 1997. She later appeared as Lizzie Spaulding on “The Guiding Light”. At age nine, she made her feature film debut with a voice role in “A Bug’s Life” and appeared that same year in “The Object of My Affection”.
Her film credits include “Remember the Titans” in 2000 and “Tiger Cruise” in 2004, her first starring role. She also appeared in “Ice Princess,” “Bring It On: All or Nothing,” and the “Scream” franchise. Panettiere gained widespread fame as Claire Bennet on NBC’s “Heroes” and as country singer Juliette Barnes on “Nashville,” earning two Golden Globe nominations for her performance.
Her final film, “Sleepwalker,” a psychological thriller about a mother experiencing frightening visions after losing her daughter in a car accident, was released in January 2026.
Personal Struggles and Recent Memoir
Panettiere had been open about her personal struggles. She spoke publicly about her long battle with addiction, which she described as connected to severe postpartum depression, childhood trauma, and pressure from the entertainment industry. She entered the spotlight as a child actor and was cast in “Heroes” at 16. She later spoke about drinking and occasionally taking opioids.
“My saving grace is that I couldn’t be messy while on set and working. But things kept getting out of control (off set). And as I got older, the drugs and alcohol became something I almost couldn’t live without.”
In May 2026, three months before her death, Panettiere published her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning”. The book detailed her fight for sobriety and the physical toll of addiction. She entered treatment for a third time in 2020, spending eight months in rehab.
“I was truly scared. I had pushed my body to a point where my eyes turned yellow, I was struggling with jaundice, and [not having the] courage to exit my house.”
She also discussed giving up custody of her daughter, Kaya, in 2018 due to her struggles with postpartum depression and addiction.
