The Dance of the Dragons is about to get very ugly. HBO’s hit series House of the Dragon is finishing its third season, and the spoilers from the set and the trailer promise a bloody war that destroys the Targaryen family from the inside. Fans who read George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood know what is coming: fire, blood, and a lot of tears. The new season, expected to arrive in Summer 2026, will throw viewers directly into the most painful battles of the civil war.

The Battle of the Gullet Brings a Major Death Early

The teaser trailer for Season 3 focuses heavily on a massive sea battle. This is the Battle of the Gullet. In the books, this fight is a turning point, and the show is making it even more heartbreaking.

Jacaerys Velaryon (Harry Collett), Rhaenyra’s oldest son and heir, rides his dragon Vermax into the fight. In the source material, Jace does not survive this battle. He dies in the water after his dragon is brought down. The trailers show Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) crying and banging on a door, which hints she just learned her son is dead.

The show is changing one key detail to make it hurt more. In the books, Jace’s betrothed, Baela Targaryen (Bethany Antonia), is not at this fight. But the trailer clearly shows Baela on her dragon Moondancer in the middle of the battle. This means she will likely watch Jace die. Fans are already dreading this moment because seeing her reaction will make the loss much worse than in the books.

Rhaenyra Finally Takes King’s Landing

The posters and trailer also confirm that Rhaenyra Targaryen will finally sit on the Iron Throne this season. At the end of Season 2, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) promised to surrender the city to Rhaenyra to stop the bloodshed.

In Season 3, that promise becomes real. Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) is busy burning the Riverlands, and Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) has fled the city with Larys Strong. This leaves King’s Landing mostly undefended. Rhaenyra will walk into the Red Keep, but holding the city will be much harder than taking it.

When she takes the throne, she does not waste time. Spoilers confirm that Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) will lose his head. Rhaenyra orders the execution of the former Hand of the King as soon as she controls the castle.

New Faces Join the Fight for the Hightowers

While the Blacks gain power, the Greens are adding new soldiers to their army. James Norton has joined the cast for Season 3. He plays Ormund Hightower. Ormund is Otto’s nephew and Alicent’s cousin. He is the Lord of Oldtown, and he is leading a massive Hightower army toward King’s Landing to fight Rhaenyra.

Other new cast members include Tommy Flanagan as Ser Roderick Dustin and Dan Fogler as Ser Torrhen Manderly. These Northern lords bring the Winter Wolves to fight for Rhaenyra, leading to more bloodshed on the ground.

Fans Are Worried About Another Book Change

A new leak about Season 3 has made some book fans very angry. The leak suggests that the dragon Dreamfyre will have a much bigger role in the show than she does in the books. Dreamfyre is Helaena’s dragon. In Fire & Blood, this dragon does not fight in the war the way the others do.

Fans on social media are worried the writers are changing too many details. One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote:

“Stop changing the book just for shock value. Dreamfyre’s story is tragic enough without ruining the lore.”

However, other fans say the changes worked well in Season 2, like giving Rhaena a dragon, so they want to wait and see the full season before judging.

The Butcher’s Ball Sets Up a Hated Death

On the ground, the war is just as brutal. The trailer shows the Winter Wolves from the North charging into battle. This is likely the Battle of the Butcher’s Ball. In the books, this is where Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) finally meets his end.

Criston has been a thorn in Rhaenyra’s side since Season 1. At the Butcher’s Ball, the Northern army surrounds and kills him. It is a brutal, inglorious death for the Kingmaker. Fans have been waiting for this moment since Criston killed Lord Beesbury. Season 3 will likely deliver that payoff.

When Does Season 3 Release?

Production on Season 3 finished in October 2025. The show is now in post-production, editing the battles and adding the visual effects for the dragons.

Matt Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen, accidentally shared that the season will likely arrive in August 2026. HBO has not confirmed the exact date yet, but the official target is Summer 2026. The season will have eight episodes.

The war is destroying the Targaryens, and there is no happy ending waiting for anyone on the Iron Throne.
