The first cour of Daemons of the Shadow Realm came to a close with Episode 12 on June 20, 2026. Titled “Retainer and Shaman,” this episode shifted the tone from mystery to outright fear. New daemon abilities came to light, hidden agendas surfaced, and Higashi Village once again faced the threat of ruin.
The episode stood out for Ivan Yosano’s horrifying spatial daemon power. The unexpected revelation of the tanuki daemon’s trapping method, Asuma’s increasingly unclear allegiance, and the looming second attack on Higashi Village all made this episode memorable.
Ivan’s Space-Cutting Ability in Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 12
Episode 12 fully revealed Ivan Yosano’s power of spatial manipulation. He uses a katana combined with daemon abilities to effectively remove, relocate, and visually hide pieces of space. The west gate of the Kagemori compound was not technically “destroyed” during the earlier incident. It was cut off and repositioned, making the removed sections seem like they were never there. This level of spatial manipulation changed everything viewers understood about daemon powers.
Ivan’s later use of his power proved even more disturbing. He used a spatial cut to hide inside the shaman’s body for an extended period. He then revealed himself at the perfect moment. The horror of his power came without gore or blood. The audience watched Ivan demonstrate how he could use a spatial cut to share a body at will.
One review described Ivan’s arrival in the episode:
“The story takes a major step forward with the chilling debut of Ivan.”
A source also noted how Ivan emerges from the shaman’s chest through a spatial cut. The shaman survived despite having a hole in his chest. There was no blood or visible wound. Ivan could simply carve space into someone and hitch a ride inside them.
Ivan’s Arrival Changes the Tone of Daemons of the Shadow Realm
While much of Episode 12 focused on investigation and worldbuilding, everything changed once Ivan Yosano entered the picture. The series spent most of the episode building anticipation around an unknown swordsman from the Kagemori mansion attack in Episode 6. The payoff was worth it.
Ivan stood out from the moment he appeared. His calm nature, unique humor, and extreme confidence made him different from all other characters introduced in the show. The anime did not try to reveal too much about him. It revealed just enough about his motives, powers, and intentions, keeping them deliberately obscured to keep viewers hooked.
His encounter with the villagers at the end of the episode lasted only a few minutes. But it shifted the tone of the story and set up a much more intense direction for the episodes ahead.
Yuru and Asa’s Family Mystery Takes an Intriguing Turn
Outside of Ivan’s proper reveal, Episode 12 contained meaningful developments for the central mystery. The search for information about Yuru and Asa’s parents led the group toward Okinawa, where new clues about their family began to emerge. The introduction of Asa’s grandmother added another emotional layer to the story while raising questions about what she knows and how she may connect to the larger conflict.
The episode also explored the aftermath of the Kagemori attack. Earlier episodes focused on the action itself, but Episode 12 showed the consequences. Learning more about the casualties, the destruction left behind, and how some Kagemori members view Yuru and Asa’s power made the conflict feel far more impactful.
The episode included some character growth for Yuru and Ken through their training scenes. This small touch made the ongoing journey feel more grounded.
The Best Aspect of Episode 12
The thickening storyline stood out as the best aspect of this episode. The introduction of Ivan as a new character also impressed viewers. He is the same strange guy who constructed the gate at the Kagemori Manor. He hides himself skillfully and enters the village only to start massacring people.
The anime currently holds a 7.95 rating on MyAnimeList and an 8.1 on IMDb. Audiences have been particularly impressed by its animation quality, signature style, approach to violence, catchy soundtrack, and story pacing. The 24-episode run gives the series time to weave a complex narrative without overwhelming viewers.
