Robert Downey Jr. played Iron Man for over a decade and helped build the Marvel Cinematic Universe into a $32 billion franchise. But now, after returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom, the actor says he prefers playing the bad guy.
Downey made this clear during an interview at Disney’s D23 fan event in the US. He was there with fellow returning stars Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell. When asked which MCU role he liked more, Downey did not hesitate.
“I will say Doom, for now, because I got to really observe what I’ve been missing the whole time, just everybody else.”
This statement has caught the attention of Marvel fans everywhere. After all, Downey’s Tony Stark was the face of the MCU for 11 years. He appeared in 10 movies as Iron Man, starting with the first Iron Man film in 2008. His last appearance was in Avengers: Endgame in 2019, where his character died saving the universe.
Now, seven years later, he is back. But this time, he wears the green cloak and metal mask of Victor Von Doom.
The Strange Feeling of Being the Bad Guy
Downey opened up about how different it feels to play a villain instead of a hero. He described the experience as weird and isolating.
“It was really weird being the guy — everyone else is hanging out, they’re the good heroes, and I’m [in] this mask and this hood. I’m like, ‘They’re all on one side of the camera, and I guess they’re all mad at me or something.’”
Playing Doctor Doom gave him a new view of his co-stars. Instead of being the hero leading the team, he now stands apart from the other actors. He watches them from behind a mask while they play the righteous characters.
This shift in perspective seems to be what Downey enjoys most about his new role. He gets to observe the dynamics on set in a way he never could as Iron Man.
What Makes Doom Different From Iron Man
Downey also talked about why Doctor Doom is not just an evil version of Iron Man. The two characters come from very different places.
Tony Stark experienced trauma that turned him into a hero. Victor Von Doom went through the opposite. His pain turned him into a villain. This fundamental difference makes the two roles completely separate in Downey’s mind.
Marvel Studios never wanted to create an evil Iron Man. They wanted a true Doctor Doom – a character with his own backstory, motivations, and powers. While Stark relies on technology and his quick wit, Doom uses sorcery and his genius intellect.
The actor also mentioned that playing the villain felt isolating compared to his previous Marvel experiences. But that isolation seems to be part of the appeal for him now.
The D23 Event and New Footage
Marvel Studios put Robert Downey Jr. ‘s Doctor Doom in the spotlight during the D23 presentation. They showed a special look at Avengers: Doomsday that gave fans their first real taste of the new villain.
The new promo hinted at just how dangerous this version of Doom could be. In one scene from the newly released trailer, Doom faces off against Thor. He easily stops the God of Thunder and his weapon, Stormbreaker, telling Thor that “hell answers to me”.

What Avengers: Doomsday Is About

From the X-Men side, Patrick Stewart returns as Professor X, Ian McKellen plays Magneto, and James Marsden appears as Cyclops.
Marvel has announced a 30-name call sheet for the film. This makes it one of the largest ensemble casts in MCU history.
Release Date and What Comes Next
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release in theaters on December 18, 2026. It will face competition from Denis Villeneuve ‘s Dune: Part Three, which releases on the same day.
The film serves as a major chapter in Marvel’s Multiverse Saga. It will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled for December 2027.
Robert Downey Jr. will appear in both films as Doctor Doom. His return to the MCU is not just a cameo. He is playing a central role in the next phase of the franchise.
