Full Main Cast and Character Guide

Matthew Macfadyen leads the ensemble as George Smiley, the brilliant and taciturn spymaster at the heart of le Carré’s intelligence universe. The role was famously played by Alec Guinness in the 1979 BBC adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and by Gary Oldman in the 2011 feature film. Macfadyen called Smiley “a quiet, intelligent, and deeply private man” and said he was “hugely thrilled and not a little daunted” to step into the role.

Charlie Hunnam plays Alec Leamas, the embattled, world-weary field operative at the center of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. Hunnam described Leamas as someone who “isn’t a traditional hero” and is “worn down by the work, shaped and eroded by it over time”.

Daniel Brühl stars as Josef Fiedler, a Stasi operative pursuing Leamas and Doris Quinz. Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu plays Doris Quinz (also known as Agent Tulip), a young East German woman recruited by Leamas to smuggle high-value Stasi documents into the West.

Agnes O’Casey takes on Liz Gold, described as “an idealistic young woman whose courage and conviction force Leamas to navigate a world where loyalties fracture and betrayal is inevitable”.

Felix Kammerer plays Hans-Dieter Mundt, a Stasi operative locked in internal rivalry with Fiedler. Dan Stevens stars as Bill Haydon, a key figure from le Carré’s Circus. Jake Dunn appears as Peter Guillam, Smiley’s lieutenant.

Anjana Vasan plays Connie Sachs, the Circus’ chief Moscow-gazer and queen of Research. Charlotte Ritchie steps into the role of Ann Smiley, George’s quick-witted and emotionally complex wife.

Joe Alwyn joins as Jim Prideaux, a charismatic Circus veteran whose off-book exploits “ruffle a few feathers back in London”. Hugh Laurie plays Control, the commanding head of the Circus, described as Smiley’s “politically shrewd, if morally fickle superior, known only by his codename”.

Supporting Cast and Guest Stars

The supporting ensemble is equally stacked. Lee Ross plays Inspector Oliver Mendel, a tenacious ex-copper and one of Smiley’s most trusted friends. James McArdle is Percy Alleline, John Dagleish is Roy Bland, and Goran Bogdan is Toby Esterhase, rounding out the Circus senior leadership.

Adam Hugill appears as Fawn, Smiley’s hardman babysitter. Safia Oakley-Green plays Molly Gibson, one of Leamas’ most trusted deputies. Ariyon Bakare is Cy Aflon, a seasoned US intelligence officer. Additional cast includes Patrick Güldenberg as Dr Karl Riemick, Volker Bruch as Emmanuel Rapp, and Saskia Rosendahl as Lotte Gamp.

It adapts two novels published 54 years apart. The main storyline comes from The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963), while the series also draws on A Legacy of Spies (2017), which follows former Circus colleague Peter Guillam as he confronts the consequences of the 1963 mission decades later.

This is George Smiley’s first television return in over four decades. Alec Guinness last played the role in the 1982 BBC adaptation of Smiley’s People. Macfadyen’s casting marks the character’s long-awaited return to the small screen.

The series is written by le Carré’s son. Stephen Cornwell, John le Carré’s son and co-founder of The Ink Factory, serves as showrunner and writer alongside Clarissa Ingram.

Two directors split the eight episodes. Michael Lennox serves as lead director and executive producer, with Oscar nominee Claudia Llosa as second director and co-executive producer.
