The midseason finale of NCIS brought a long-awaited end to a personal mystery for one agent while kicking off a major new mission involving a familiar face. In Season 23, Episode 9, titled “Heaven and Nature,” Alden Parker finally learned the devastating truth about his mother’s disappearance over 50 years ago. The episode also concluded with a stunning cliffhanger that brings a former team member back into the fold under mysterious circumstances.
The Truth About Eleanor Parker’s Disappearance
For his entire life, Alden Parker believed his mother, Eleanor Parker, died in a drunk-driving accident in 1972 after choosing to abandon her family. This belief shaped his understanding of his childhood and his relationship with loss. The investigation in this episode revealed that nearly every part of that story was a carefully constructed lie.
The truth began to surface when Dr. Jimmy Palmer examined Eleanor’s exhumed remains. He discovered the woman died from blunt force trauma to the head, an injury inconsistent with a car crash. Forensic scientist Kasie Hines then delivered a bigger shock: DNA testing proved the body buried in Eleanor’s grave was not Eleanor Parker at all.
The woman was identified as Judy Burm, the first wife of a corrupt former Illinois State Trooper named Lester Burm. This discovery reopened a cold case and sent Parker and Jessica Knight to track down Burm, now nearly 80 years old and living in an RV.
A Story of Abuse, Heroism, and a Cover-Up
Through photos, witness accounts, and a reconstructed facial model, the NCIS team pieced together the horrific events of 1972. Eleanor Parker had befriended Judy Burm, who confided that her husband, Lester, was abusive. Judy wanted to escape with her young daughter, Lily, and Eleanor helped arrange a plan to hide them with relatives.
Lester, using his authority as a state trooper, discovered the plan. He forced the women’s car off the road, killed Judy at the scene, and set the vehicle on fire. He then filed a false police report, claiming Eleanor was the one who died. However, Eleanor survived the crash. She found Lily and took her to a motel near Toledo, Ohio, planning to get the girl to safety.
Lester tracked them down. He killed Eleanor to silence her, dragging her body away as Lily hid in a closet. The next day, Eleanor’s cousin Connie arrived, found Lily, and helped her disappear under a new identity. Lily grew up as Penelope “Nelly” Johnson, forever hiding from her violent father.
Parker and Knight eventually found the adult Lily. She revealed that Parker’s own father, Roman, had been trying to find her before his recent death, seeking the truth. Confronted with the evidence, Lester Burmโwho had been feigning memory lossโfinally confessed to dumping Eleanor’s body and her car in a small pond outside Toledo. The team recovered her remains, allowing Parker to finally give his mother a proper burial.
Executive producer Steven D. Binder commented on the storyline, stating:
“We had a backstory that was also pretty dark but also pretty heroicโฆ Parkerโs mom is a heroโฆ itโs dark, but it ends pretty well.”
A Stunning Cliffhanger: The Return of Ellie Bishop
While Parker found closure, the episode ended with a major twist that sets up the show’s return. Jessica Knight, who has been training for the secretive NCIS: Elite division, received her first official assignment from Director Leon Vance.
Her target is former NCIS Special Agent Eleanor “Ellie” Bishop, played by Emily Wickersham. In a final scene, Bishop was shown secretly watching Parker’s mother’s funeral from a distance. This marks Wickersham’s first appearance on the series since her character’s departure in the Season 18 finale in May 2021.
Bishop originally left NCIS after being publicly implicated in leaking classified documents. It was later revealed this was a cover so she could resign in disgrace and undertake a deep-cover operation for an old contact of Ziva David’s. Showrunner Steven D. Binder hinted that her time undercover has changed her, telling TVLine, “She is not the same personโฆ a lot has happened to her, and that will go a long way to explain why we are looking for her in a way that suggests sheโs done something wrong”.
Binder also confirmed that this storyline will be resolved quickly, noting, “Weโre gonna run this story out and have it end, so expect to see her right now in one episode that will run it out”.
