The first season of The Mighty Nein, the animated series based on Critical Role’s beloved second Dungeons & Dragons campaign, concluded with an eventful finale on December 22, 2025. The episode, titled “The Zadash Job,” left the main characters scattered, emotionally tested, and facing the harsh truth about their place in a growing war. Rather than a simple victory, the ending emphasized a hard-learned lesson about teamwork and unveiled a terrifying piece of Mollymauk Tealeaf’s forgotten history.
The Plan That Tested the Team
The season finale centered on a risky heist proposed by The Gentleman. The goal was to steal the powerful Luxon Beacon from the Soltryce Academy during the Harvest Close festival. This artifact is at the heart of the political conflict between the Dwendalian Empire and the Kryn Dynasty, making the job far more dangerous than a simple theft.
The Mighty Nein devised a detailed plan requiring perfect coordination. Roles were assigned: Fjord and Beau would infiltrate the party, Jester would create a distraction with fireworks, Nott would navigate the sewers to the vault, and Caleb would handle the magical locks. Mollymauk was tasked with being the getaway driver. From the start, the plan faced problems. Jester discovered a dangerous enemy on the guest list, forcing a last-minute role swap with Beau. More critically, the emotional stakes were high. Caleb was going to be in the same room as his former abuser, Archmage Trent Ikithon, creating a major risk of the mission falling apart.
A Heist Interrupted by War
For a moment, the team’s coordination worked. Jester, after a risky climb and a timely assist from her deity The Traveler, set off the fireworks. Nott and Caleb reached the Beacon. However, everything changed when Caleb confronted Trent Ikithon. The archmage tried to lure Caleb back by promising him the power to change the past with the Beacon’s magic. Caleb’s hesitation created an opening, but not for escape.
A Kryn Dynasty strike team, led by Essek, crashed into the academy to reclaim their sacred artifact. The heist instantly turned into a three-way battlefield between the Mighty Nein, the Empire’s mages, and the Kryn soldiers. In the chaos, Essek’s team seized the Beacon and fled. The Mighty Nein were forced to retreat into the sewers, battered and without their prize.
The Fight in the Dark and a Plea for Help
The group’s ordeal was not over. In the sewers, they ran into the escaping Kryn warriors. The Kryn used the Beacon’s power to plunge the tunnels into magical darkness, leaving the Nein blind and vulnerable. When a Kryn soldier moved to attack Jester, Fjord made a desperate choice. He consumed a mysterious yellow orb connected to a haunting voice he has heard all season, granting him the power to see in the dark and defeat the threat. This act of power came at a visible personal cost, frightening his own friends.
As the team prepared for a final stand, an unexpected figure arrived: Yasha, the Orphanmaker. The barbarian, who had been mysteriously tracking the Beacon all season, killed the remaining Kryn soldier and picked up the artifact. The moment she touched it, something extraordinary happened. The Beacon’s energy surged, and the sinister rune on Yasha’s neck deactivated. The controlled killer vanished, replaced by a vulnerable woman who fell to her knees. In that instant, Yasha’s first words to the Mighty Nein were not a threat, but a plea:
“Please…help me.”
This moment sets a new direction for Yasha’s story. Actor Ashley Johnson explained that the creative team wanted a more dramatic introduction for the character than in the original campaign. This vulnerability completely changes the group’s perception of the fearsome figure who had been following them.
The True Lesson of the Season
While the physical battle ended with Yasha’s request, the emotional core of the finale was about the group itself. Earlier in the episode, the stress of the mission and their personal traumas had caused the Mighty Nein to split apart. Fjord left to find himself, Caleb went after Trent alone, and Jester and Nott felt lost and abandoned.
They each failed on their own. Caleb was captured and humiliated by his former peers. Fjord was nearly drowned by the dark entity haunting him. It was only when they found each other again that they regained their strength. The finale powerfully argued that their unity is their greatest power. As a showrunner noted, the season aimed to show these characters before they became a team, highlighting how their shared struggles define them. The failed heist ultimately succeeded in teaching them they are stronger together.
Vess DeRogna and the Uncovering of Lucien
The final scene of the season shifted focus to a looming threat. Vess DeRogna, a mysterious member of the Cerberus Assembly, examined an ancient book tied to Mollymauk’s past. Her eyes glowed a familiar red, and she laughed menacingly. This book is connected to the “Eyes of Nine” and the entity known as the Somnovem.
This moment uncovers a devastating truth about Mollymauk. Vess addresses him as “Lucien,” a name from his forgotten past, and claims she killed him once before. Molly’s body is covered in nine mysterious eye tattoos that react to Vess’s presence. The story reveals that before Mollymauk woke up with no memories, his body was inhabited by Lucien Tavelle, the leader of a cult called the Tombtakers who sought power from the Somnovem. Vess, who calls herself the Nonagon, betrayed and killed Lucien during a ritual, stealing his tome of power. Mollymauk is the amnesiac fragment of that person, and his dark history is now resurfacing.

Setting the Stage for What Comes Next
The first season of The Mighty Nein ends not with a clean resolution, but with the characters on a new path. The group is physically reunited and has learned to value their bond. They now have a potential new ally in Yasha, whose plea for help they are unlikely to ignore. However, they also carry new burdens: Fjord’s risky new power, Caleb’s unresolved trauma, and the terrifying mystery of Mollymauk’s past as Lucien.
The final shot of Vess DeRogna, studying the book of the Eyes of Nine with glowing red eyes, confirms that the Mighty Nein are caught in a much larger and more ancient conflict than a simple political war. Their next steps will not just be about stealing an artifact, but about confronting forgotten histories and cosmic threats that have been waiting for them.
