The Netflix docu-reality series My Korean Boyfriend delivered a heart-tugging moment in its final episodes as Morena Monaco finally met the family of her fiancé, Kim Su-woong. The highly anticipated meeting, where the couple planned to announce their engagement, was filled with nerves and cultural hurdles but culminated in a powerful emotional breakthrough thanks to a handwritten letter.
The series, which premiered its first four episodes on January 1, 2026, and released the final four on January 8, follows five Brazilian women traveling to Seoul to meet their Korean partners in person. Morena’s journey stood out as one of the most developed, transitioning from a long-distance relationship to a planned international marriage. Her biggest challenge was gaining the approval of Su-woong’s mother, who had previously expressed reservations about her son dating a foreign woman and moving abroad.
The Tense Meeting and Engagement Announcement
Morena and Su-woong arrived at a restaurant for the meeting, both anxious. Morena asked Su-woong if he had told his mother about their engagement, and he admitted he had not, explaining that he found it difficult to share big news with his parents. When his mother arrived, initial greetings were warm, with her noting Morena looked prettier than the last time they met. The tension quickly resurfaced when Su-woong broached the topic of their future.
“I was talking to Morena…the other day…and proposed to her. I just thought you should know,” Su-woong shared with his mother.
He explained they wanted to get married soon, and Morena added her desire to start a family. Su-woong’s mother’s reaction was reserved. When discussing the possibility of a wedding ceremony in Brazil, she focused on the practical difficulty, noting it was a thirty-hour flight. She then opened up about her initial feelings, telling Morena through Su-woong’s translation:
“At first, when Su-woong…told me that he had a Brazilian girlfriend, I didn’t know what to do. It was kind of a shock. It was disconcerting”.
Morena acknowledged this, agreeing the situation was not easy for her. The conversation revealed the core conflict: a mother facing the prospect of her son moving across the world with a partner from a different culture.
Morena’s Letter Creates an Emotional Breakthrough
Seeing the conversation stall, Morena took out a letter she had prepared. She had written it in Korean and asked Su-woong to read it aloud to his mother. This gesture of effort and respect immediately changed the tone of the meeting. As Su-woong began reading, the letter’s heartfelt content brought raw emotion to the surface.
The letter thanked Su-woong’s mother for raising a kind and good-hearted man. It directly addressed the pain of separation: “Knowing that the son you lovingly raised will live so far away. When I think about how painful this must be for you, my heart breaks too”. Morena promised to take good care of Su-woong and assured his mother that her own family in Brazil would welcome him as a son. She also promised they would visit Korea often.
The impact was immediate. Su-woong struggled to get through the letter without crying, and seeing his tears, his mother also began to weep. Morena moved to sit beside her future mother-in-law to comfort her. The letter bridged the emotional and linguistic gap, allowing Su-woong’s mother to see Morena’s sincerity and love for her son.
“If this is what my son wants. I’m happy for you both. And since you’re getting married. I can bless your union,” Su-woong’s mother said after hearing the letter.
She advised the couple to be responsible and love each other always. Her final requests were practical and cultural: she expressed sadness about not being able to talk directly to Morena and urged her to learn Korean. She also insisted that any future grandchildren be taught the language.

The Road to a Cross-Cultural Wedding
With his mother’s blessing secured, Morena and Su-woong moved forward with concrete wedding plans. The show followed them as they went wedding dress shopping in Seoul. Morena, initially conflicted about style, decided to honor both her and Su-woong’s cultures by planning two ceremonies: one in Korea and one in Brazil.
The couple also participated in a professional pre-wedding photoshoot in Seoul, a common practice in Korea, which left Morena feeling happy and content. The series’ epilogue in Episode 7 showed the culmination of their journey: their wedding in Brazil. Morena walked down the aisle in the presence of her father and her friends from the show—Luanny, Mariana, Katy, and Camila—who served as her bridesmaids.
