The fourth season of Bridgerton takes fans on an emotional rollercoaster with Francesca Bridgerton’s storyline. After losing her husband John Stirling suddenly, she holds onto the hope that she is pregnant with his child. But the devastating truth, revealed in the new episodes now streaming on Netflix, confirms she is not expecting, leaving her shattered and questioning her purpose.

Spoilers ahead for Bridgerton Season 4, Part 2.

The moment fans have been bracing for finally arrived in the latest episodes of the Netflix hit. John Stirling, the Earl of Kilmartin and Francesca’s beloved husband, dies unexpectedly in his sleep. What makes this tragedy even more crushing is what follows. Francesca convinces herself that she is carrying his baby, only to learn through a brutal examination that she is not pregnant .

All eight episodes of Bridgerton Season 4 became available on February 26, 2026, on Netflix worldwide. Viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and everywhere else can stream the entire season now. The second half of the season focuses heavily on Francesca’s grief and her complicated feelings toward Michaela, John’s cousin who has returned from Scotland .

The Moment Francesca Believes She Is Pregnant

After John’s sudden death in Episode 6, titled “The Passing Winter,” Francesca appears unusually calm. Her family worries about her composure. She finally reveals the reason in Episode 7, “The Beyond.” She has missed her monthly courses and believes she is with child .

Francesca calls the potential baby a gift from John. She tells Penelope and Eloise that John left her “a piece of himself.” She compares her situation to her mother Violet, who was pregnant with Hyacinth when their father Edmund died. For Francesca, this possible pregnancy becomes her lifeline, the one thing keeping her from falling apart .

But the truth comes out when she must undergo an examination. The House of Lords needs to confirm the pregnancy to determine the line of succession for the Kilmartin estate. Violet and Eloise stay by Francesca’s side during the invasive Regency-era procedure. The doctor delivers the crushing news. Francesca is not pregnant .

Why Francesca’s Grief Goes Deeper

After learning the truth, Francesca finally breaks down. She collapses in her mother’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably. But her pain goes beyond the loss of her husband. It connects to something she has struggled with all season .

Throughout Part 1 of Season 4, Francesca obsessed over reaching her “pinnacle” during intimacy with John. She believed her inability to do so was why she had not conceived yet. Actress Hannah Dodd, who plays Francesca, explained this heartbreaking mindset to Swoon. “It really breaks my heart that she thinks she’s responsible for not being pregnant yet because of [not finding the pinnacle],” Dodd said. “Obviously, putting that much pressure on that is not going to help it happen as well” .

After the examination confirms she is not pregnant, Francesca has a raw conversation with Violet. She tells her mother that Violet does not understand her pain. Violet had eight children with Edmund before he died. She had “pieces of him” to hold onto. Francesca feels she has failed John by not giving him an heir, leaving her with nothing to remember him by .

Dodd spoke to Variety about this moment. “I don’t know if she knows. She’s got a tsunami of feelings,” the actor said. “I think it’s something that connects her and her mum, and there’s this idea that this is how her mum got through [the loss of her husband]โ€ฆ I do think that she really, really wanted a baby, and I think that [having one] would have also been devastating in its own right, but also been a piece of John that she gets to keep. It could have given her a purpose” .

How the Show Differs From the Bridgerton Books

Fans who have read Julia Quinn’s novels know that Francesca’s story plays out differently on the page. In the sixth book, When He Was Wicked, Francesca does become pregnant with John’s child. However, she tragically miscarries .

The show has taken a different path. By having Francesca believe she is pregnant only to discover she is not, the series removes the miscarriage storyline entirely. Instead, it focuses on her immediate grief and the added pain of having no physical piece of John to carry forward .

In the books, Francesca eventually finds love again with John’s cousin, Michael Stirling. They go on to have two children together. This detail comes from Quinn’s The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After book, a collection of second epilogues. Francesca and Michael have a son named John Stirling (after her late husband) and a daughter named Janet Helen Stirling .

But the Netflix series made a massive change. Michael Stirling is now Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza. This gender-swapped character sets up Bridgerton’s first central queer love story. With this change, the question of whether Francesca will have biological children in the show remains open .

What Happens Next With Michaela

Throughout her grief, Francesca finds comfort in an unlikely person. Michaela, John’s free-spirited cousin, understands the depth of her loss in a way others cannot. The two women grow closer despite their opposite personalities. Francesca, who is quiet and reserved, finds herself challenged by Michaela’s bold and chaotic energy .

In a conversation with Variety, Dodd discussed Francesca’s confusing feelings. “I think Francesca isn’t even aware of that as a possibility,” she said about attraction to Michaela. “As much as she’s feeling feelings, she doesn’t really know where they come from and why. For the most part, it’s a confronting energy for her” .

Masali Baduza, who plays Michaela, confirmed her character has feelings for Francesca. “I think Michaela has feelings for Francesca. I think that she has pushed them down to the very bottom, but they are there, and she isn’t really acknowledging them. Obviously, Francesca is her cousin’s wife, so it’s a lot for her, but she’s definitely feeling that level of attraction for Francesca” .

The season ends with a painful separation. Francesca asks Michaela to stay in London. Michaela agrees but flees back to Scotland without saying goodbye. Baduza explained her character’s choice. “Michaela’s feeling a lot of emotions, and she’s very overwhelmed. I think that her coping mechanism is to just run away and pretend like nothing is happening. If she’s not there to face it, then she doesn’t have to deal with it” .

What the Cast Says About Francesca’s Future

The actors have hinted at what may come for Francesca. Dodd told TheWrap that she is excited to tell Francesca’s love story when the time comes. “It’s been beautiful getting to meet fans and for them to share their direct stories has been incredible. It’s been such an honor,” she said. “It’s only fair that everybody gets to see themselves and their love story as part of this show, so I’m super proud” .

Showrunner Jess Brownell has confirmed that both Season 5 and Season 6 are greenlit. They will tell the love stories of Eloise and Francesca, though the order remains unconfirmed. Brownell teased to Entertainment Weekly that Michaela’s presence will continue to shake things up for Francesca .

Victor Alli, who played John, spoke about his character’s lasting impact. In his final scene, John completes a puzzle with Francesca and Michaela. He does the ground, and Michaela finishes the sky. Alli told Variety, “John would want her to be happy, and would be behind whatever she decides to do. She shouldn’t feel the pressure of having to stay in this wallowing rut, and he expects her to bloom” .

For now, Francesca ends Season 4 alone and grieving. The hope of pregnancy gave her strength through John’s funeral and the immediate aftermath. When that hope was taken away, she had to face the full weight of her loss. The journey ahead for Francesca will involve healing, self-discovery, and eventually, a love story that challenges everything she thought she knew about herself.
