The war for New York City is about to get much worse before it gets better. With the March 2026 premiere of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 quickly approaching, the man playing the villain everyone loves to hate is making some very bold promises. Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Wilson Fisk (also known as Kingpin), is telling everyone who will listen that the upcoming season is not just good—it is the show operating at its highest level. He is calling it more intense, more dangerous, and more complex than anything the creative team has done before.
The first season of Daredevil: Born Again brought Charlie Cox back as Matt Murdock and D’Onofrio back as his biggest enemy. It was a huge hit for Disney+, pulling in millions of viewers who wanted to see the Man Without Fear return to their screens. But according to the star, the story being told in the second season is where things really start to click. He believes the show has finally hit its stride.
Kingpin promises a season unlike anything seen before
When Vincent D’Onofrio talks about Daredevil: Born Again, people listen. He has played Wilson Fisk for nearly a decade, starting with the original Netflix series. He knows this character inside and out. So when he sat down for an interview with Gold Derby during a break from filming, his words carried a lot of weight. He told them that the scenes they were shooting for the second season were unlike anything they had attempted previously.
“Some of the scenes that we’re having in the second season, there’s been nothing like them before,” D’Onofrio said .
He explained that the show is very difficult to make because it focuses on two main characters who are complete opposites. Matt Murdock lives in the light, trying to be a good lawyer and a good man. Wilson Fisk lives in the dark, using power and fear to control everything around him. Writing a script that balances those two forces is a tough job. But D’Onofrio says the team is working hard to get it right.
“We’re doing everything we need to do to struggle through them, get them right, and keep trying to do the best we can do,” he added .
The actor also revealed that while Matt and Fisk will not share the screen very often, when they do, it will be explosive. Charlie Cox chimed in during the same interview, noting that putting the two characters together too much actually makes the story less interesting. But D’Onofrio clarified that the few moments they do share in Season 2 are going to be “intense as hell” and far more dangerous than what fans saw in the first season .
The story picks up right where Season 1 ended
For those who need a quick recap, the first season of Daredevil: Born Again ended with Wilson Fisk, now the Mayor of New York City, declaring martial law. After a violent attack at a gala, Fisk used the chaos to grab total power. He also started a serious crackdown on vigilantes, which is a direct threat to Daredevil and anyone else who puts on a mask to fight crime .
Vincent D’Onofrio confirmed that Season 2 will start immediately after that moment. There is no time jump at the beginning. The martial law declared by Fisk does not just go away. It gets worse.
“We pick up where we left off, and things are just getting increasingly intense. At the end of the first season, he’s declared martial law, and that doesn’t go away. That gets even more intense, and there’s a feeling of a resistance being formed with Charlie’s side of the show,” D’Onofrio explained to Gold Derby .
This sets up a classic war story. Matt Murdock and his allies are forming a resistance to fight back against the Mayor who is turning the city into a police state. It is a story about rebellion, justice, and what happens when the bad guy wins the political game.
New York City becomes a main character in the fight
During a panel at Dragon Con 2025 in Atlanta, Vincent D’Onofrio shared more details about the scope of the second season. He told the audience that New York City itself is going to play a huge role in the upcoming episodes. The city will not just be a backdrop for the action. It will be deeply affected by the story.
“One of the main characters is New York City. New York is affected immensely by the second season. I mean the metaphor would be the city ignites, and not in a good way,” D’Onofrio said at the convention .
This means viewers can expect to see the five boroughs turn into a war zone. With Fisk in control and Daredevil fighting back, the ordinary people living in the city will feel the impact. The showrunner, Dario Scardapane, also told SFX Magazine that the show will pick up about six months after the declaration of martial law. By that time, Fisk’s control has fully taken hold.
“Fisk has won, the city is gradually being put under his boot and we pick up all of our major players around six months later. The Fisk administration at this point has really taken hold. At the same time, there’s a bubbling up of an underground,” Scardapane explained .
This description paints a picture of an occupied city. People are living under the boot of a dictator, and a resistance movement is starting to fight back from the shadows.
Who is coming back for the fight?
The cast for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is packed with familiar faces. Charlie Cox is back as Matt Murdock, the lawyer who fights crime at night. Deborah Ann Woll returns as Karen Page, and Elden Henson is back as Foggy Nelson. Their return is important because they represent Matt’s connection to his old life and his humanity .
Jon Bernthal is also returning as Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher. His appearance in the first season was a huge highlight for many viewers, and having him back for the second season adds a violent wild card to the resistance movement .
Wilson Bethel is coming back as Benjamin Poindexter, the deadly assassin known as Bullseye. Krysten Ritter will also appear, reprising her role as Jessica Jones from her own Netflix series. This marks another step in bringing the Defenders universe into the main Marvel Studios story .
There are also new faces joining the cast. Matthew Lillard, known for his roles in Scream and Scooby-Doo, is joining as a character named Mr. Charles, who is rumored to be an antagonist to Fisk . Lili Taylor is also joining the cast in an undisclosed role.
Directors and showrunners returning for Season 2
The creative team behind the camera is also coming back to finish what they started. Dario Scardapane is returning as the showrunner. According to Charlie Cox, Scardapane wrote the pilot episode for Season 2 as well as the last two episodes, which suggests he has a strong handle on where the story is going .
The directing duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are also returning to direct a block of episodes. They were heavily involved in setting the tone for the first season. Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel Television, praised the pair highly in an interview with Collider.
“They are fundamental in establishing the tone of Born Again. Those guys are tonal masters. The way they tell a story, they know how to pull the levers of drama and tension especially, like no one else,” Winderbaum said .
Having the same team back means the show should maintain the gritty, grounded feel that made the first season work, while also ramping up the tension for the conflict to come.
