New Trailer Reveals Opening Song and Cast
The newly released main trailer gives viewers their first extended look at the animation produced by Asahi Production, the studio behind Gushing Over Magical Girls. The preview showcases the unique visual style of the series, blending horror aesthetics with lighthearted comedic moments .
The trailer also debuts the opening theme song “DaradaraโกDancing,” performed by the main cast members in character. Mutsumi Tamura voices the titular Dara-san, while Minami Tsuda and Momoka Terasawa play the sibling duo Hinata and Kaoru Misogiya. Veteran voice actor Masaki Terasoma provides narration for the series .
Story and Characters of Reiwa no Dara-san
The series follows siblings Hinata and Kaoru, who live in a mountain town with a dark legend. For generations, the western mountains have been forbidden territory, home to a terrifying creature known as the Yamatagi Madaraโa half-human, half-serpent deity said to curse anyone who enters .
When a landslide destroys the boundary fence during a storm, the curious siblings accidentally wander into the restricted area. There they come face to face with Dara-san, a six-armed monster with the upper body of a shrine maiden and the lower body of a massive snake. Despite her horrifying appearance and claims of being a fearsome curse deity, the children are completely unfazed and immediately befriend her, giving her the nickname “Dara-san” .
Dara-san turns out to be a gentle and lonely figure who has adapted to modern civilization. The story follows this unlikely friendship as the deity experiences contemporary life through her interactions with the Misogiya family .
Creative Team Behind the Series
Masaki Suzuki, known for directing Gushing Over Magical Girls, takes the director’s chair for this adaptation. The character designs come from Koichi Kikuta, whose previous work includes the beloved KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! series. Music composer Rei Ishizuka handles the score, with production by Lantis .
The creative team also includes series composers Nobuo Kimura and Yasutomo Yamada, with a lengthy list of designers working on costumes, props, and the mysterious creatures that appear throughout the story .
Cast Member Comments
The main cast shared their excitement about the project through official channels. Mutsumi Tamura, voicing Dara-san, described the original work as “an incredibly dynamic story” with serious developments balanced by comedy. “Dara-san has a truly tragic past, which was painful to read about. But I was really happy to see how Dara-san was saved by the siblings in the modern era storyline,” Tamura commented .
Minami Tsuda, who plays Hinata, emphasized that despite the horror elements, the series remains accessible. “Hinata is not a character who feels particularly scary, so I hope even people who dislike horror will give it a try. I cannot go into haunted houses either,” she said with a laugh .
Momoka Terasawa described her character Kaoru as someone who “constantly does the opposite of what you expect.” She added, “The greatest appeal of this work is the huge contrast between the comedy scenes and the serious parts” .
Official Cosplay Collaboration
In a unique promotional move, the production team announced an official cosplay project featuring gravure idol Kei Fubuki as Dara-san. Fubuki will appear alongside the main cast at the KADOKAWA booth during AnimeJapan 2026, scheduled for March 28-29 at Tokyo Big Sight .
Fubuki expressed her enthusiasm for the role, stating that the original manga’s “alternating waves of fear and humor completely drew me into Dara-san’s world”.
