The second episode of Invincible Season 4 takes viewers on a deep dive into the bloody history of the Viltrumite Empire, answering questions fans have had since the series began. “I’ll Give You the Grand Tour” shifts focus away from Earth to follow Nolan (Omni-Man) and Allen the Alien on a mission that uncovers the shocking reason why the Viltrumite population dropped to only about 50 surviving members.
The episode, which dropped on Prime Video on March 18, 2026 alongside two other episodes, spends significant time exploring what happened to the once-mighty empire that once dominated galaxies. Through an extended flashback sequence, viewers finally witness the catastrophic event that changed everything for Mark Grayson’s ancestral people.
The Scourge Virus: How Billions of Viltrumites Died
Invincible Season 4 Episode 2 opens on Viltrum, showing the planet before its downfall. A young Nolan is seen teaching young Viltrumite children about their history, including the assassination of Emperor Argall by someone they only call “The Betrayer.” The scene establishes how Viltrumite society operatedโbrutal, strength-obsessed, and willing to kill billions in purges to eliminate anyone they considered weak.
The turning point comes when a meteor approaches the planet, breaking apart and releasing metal devices that spread a gas into the atmosphere. This gas turns out to be a biological weapon specifically engineered to attack Viltrumite DNA. The Viltrumites name it “The Scourge Virus,” and it proves to be highly contagious and extremely deadly to their species.
What follows is a devastating sequence showing Viltrumites collapsing, coughing up blood, and dying by the thousands. The Grand Regent at the time orders a quarantine of all infected individuals, but the damage is already done. In a chilling move, the leadership also orders the execution of all slaves on Viltrum to prevent news of the empire’s weakness from spreading to their enemies. Billions die, both on Viltrum and across their conquered territories.
How Nolan Survived When Billions Died
The flashback shows young Nolan contracting the disease alongside his fellow Viltrumites. While most around him perishโincluding his father and the general addressing his unitโNolan somehow survives. The episode does not provide a clear explanation for why Nolan lived while others died, but Robert Kirkman, the creator of Invincible, addressed this mystery in a recent interview.
“It’s possible it may come up in the future. It’s certainly unknown for now. Viruses work in different ways; some people survive and some people don’t,” Kirkman explained. He added that there might be more elements to Nolan’s character that will be revealed as the show continues.
The aftermath of the virus left the Viltrumite population so small that inbreeding became unavoidable. The surviving leadership, however, remained determined to push the limits and ensure their race survived no matter the cost.
The Real Mission Behind Viltrumite Expansion
Centuries after the virus, the older Nolan tells Allen the Alien the full story of his people’s downfall. More importantly, he reveals the true purpose behind the Viltrumite mission to conquer other planets. It was not simply about dominationโit was about survival.
Nolan explains that his real mission across the galaxy was to find planets with alien species capable of breeding with Viltrumites. Earth became critically important because Mark’s powers proved that humans and Viltrumites could produce offspring. The episode implies that if Mark had not developed powers, Nolan might have been forced to destroy the planet.
This revelation reframes much of what viewers saw in earlier seasons. The Viltrumite Empire, despite its brutal methods, was desperately trying to prevent its own extinction. The episode shows Nolan helping dispose of bodies into space after the virus, with corpses eventually forming rings around the planetโa haunting visual reminder of what was lost.
Thaedus: The Betrayer Revealed
The present-day storyline follows Nolan, Allen, and Allen’s girlfriend Telia as they sneak to meet with Thaedus, the leader of the Coalition of Planets. Voiced by legendary actor Peter Cullen, Thaedus drops a massive revelationโhe is the one the Viltrumite Empire calls “The Betrayer.”
Thaedus admits he assassinated Emperor Argall because he believed that without their leader, the Viltrumites might change their cruel ways. When that did not happen, he took even more drastic action by creating the Scourge Virus that killed billions. In the episode’s most intense scene, Thaedus reveals he has engineered an even more dangerous version of the virusโone that would wipe out every remaining Viltrumite if released.
Nolan threatens to kill Thaedus but stops himself. He makes Thaedus promise never to release the new virus unless there is absolutely no other choice. This moment shows how much Nolan has changed, now willing to protect even the people who raised him in violence rather than see them completely exterminated.
New Threats: Thragg Makes His Debut
The episode’s mid-credits scene delivers another major moment for fans. Conquest, who escaped from his underground prison on Earth, returns to Viltrum and kneels before the Grand Regent. He begs to be executed for his failure to defeat Mark and Atom Eve, believing his death would serve as an example for other Viltrumites to become stronger.
The Viltrumite leader refuses, coldly stating he will “not reward failure” and tells Conquest he still has work to do. The camera then shifts to reveal the Grand RegentโThragg, voiced by Lee Pace. For fans of the comic books, Thragg’s introduction signals that the Viltrumite War is about to become much more dangerous. He is one of the most powerful and ruthless characters in the Invincible universe.
Building the Resistance Against Viltrum
Much of Episode 2 follows Nolan and Allen as they travel across the galaxy collecting weapons and allies to fight the remaining Viltrumites. Their journey includes finding Space Racer, who somehow survived being buried under rubble for 100 years, and recruiting him to the cause after Nolan apologizes for past actions. They collect beetles whose blood contains a compound that weakens Viltrumites. The episode also mentions potential allies including Battle Beast and Tech Jacket, who is actually located on Earth.
One of their most dangerous stops is the Rognarr planet, home to creatures even Viltrumites fear. Nolan admits he previously covered the planet’s sun with a disc to trigger climate change and freeze the Rognarrs. When the incompetent ship captain accidentally destroys the disc, the ice melts and releases far more Rognarrs than expected. Allen and Nolan barely escape with their lives.

What This Means for Mark and Earth
While Episode 2 focuses almost entirely on Nolan and Allen, the revelations directly impact Mark Grayson and Earth. Thaedus reminds Nolan that the Viltrumites will attack Mark and Earth regardless of whether Nolan agrees to fight for the Coalition. The episode ends with Nolan deciding to leave and meet with Mark, setting up a father-son reunion that could change the course of the coming war.
The information about why Viltrumites need Earthโfor breeding to save their raceโadds another layer to the conflict. Mark is not just fighting conquering aliens; he is fighting people who see his home planet as the key to their species’ survival.
