The NBC comedy series St. Denis Medical delivered another solid mix of workplace chaos and genuine character moments with its latest episode. Season 2 Episode 16, titled “Experience With Human Babies,” aired on March 23, 2026, and gave viewers three distinct storylines that showed different sides of the hospital staff. From hiring battles to petty arguments and an ambulance ride that turned into a therapy session, the episode kept the laughs coming while moving forward some key personal journeys.
Joyce’s Personal Feelings Complicate the Birthing Center Hiring
The main story of the episode centered on Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey) and her mission to hire a head midwife for the hospital’s new birthing center. After receiving a $10-million donation in season one, Joyce has been working hard to get the center ready. But with the hospital already struggling financially, she needs to make the right choice.
Alex (Allison Tolman) joins Joyce to interview candidates, and the first few interviews are complete disasters. One candidate has only delivered animal babies, while another talks about eating placentas and asks to smoke during the interview. There is also a “mid-husband” whose title alone makes Alex uncomfortable.
Just when things seem hopeless, a candidate named Ashley (Kristen Schaal) walks in. She has impressive qualifications, including training at one of the top midwifery programs in Michigan, and clearly knows her work. But there is a major problem. Ashley is dating Sanderson, Joyce’s former fiancé.
Joyce broke off her engagement to Sanderson just a few episodes ago, and seeing his new girlfriend triggers something in her. Despite Ashley being the perfect candidate, Joyce refuses to hire her. She instead picks Mel, a male candidate with far less experience. When Alex points out that this decision makes no sense for the hospital, Joyce gets defensive and accuses Alex of overstepping. Joyce even suggests cutting budgets in other departments to make up for delaying the center’s opening.
“Overstepping.”
— Joyce to Alex after being called out for letting personal feelings affect her hiring decision.
Alex does not back down easily. She schedules a joint second interview with both Mel and Ashley, forcing Joyce to face her bias. During a private conversation, Joyce admits the truth. Ashley is a reminder of Sanderson, and that reminder hurts. Alex helps Joyce see that the birthing center is her “baby,” and she needs to put what is best for it first.
In the end, Joyce offers the job to Ashley, acknowledging that Ashley’s willingness to work for her ex-fiancée’s former partner shows real character. Joyce also realizes that hiring Ashley says more about her own confidence and growth than it does about any past relationship.
Matt’s First Ride-Along Brings Bruce Along for a Wild Ride
The second story followed Matt (Mekki Leeper) on his first EMT ride-along. Joyce requires all nurses to do this so they better understand what patients experience before they reach the hospital. Matt is clearly nervous at the start, but his anxiety looks small compared to Bruce (Josh Lawson), who decides to tag along.
Bruce shows up wearing sunglasses and acting like he is starring in an action movie. He jumps over walls, yells heroic lines, and generally makes a scene wherever he goes. The first emergency call is for a man stung by a bee. Bruce dramatically runs to the rescue, only to find the patient already standing by the ambulance waiting for help. The second call is more serious. An elderly woman’s Life Alert went off after she fell in her apartment, but the EMTs cannot get inside.
Bruce refuses to wait for the fire department. He decides to climb onto a narrow ledge to reach an open window. The plan fails. The windows are locked, and Bruce gets stuck, terrified of the height. Matt steps out to help him, but then Matt also becomes too scared to move back inside.
Stuck on the ledge together, the two have an honest conversation. Matt tells Bruce that he does not have to pretend to be brave all the time. Bruce fires back with his own truth, telling Matt that he needs to take that same advice. Bruce points out that Matt has been avoiding his feelings for Serena (Kahyun Kim) because he is scared of getting hurt.
“I always thought you were weak, but since getting to know you, I have realized just how strong you are.”
— Bruce to Matt during their conversation on the ledge.
The moment gives Matt a push he has needed for a long time. Bruce’s words clearly stick with him, and viewers can expect to see how this conversation changes Matt’s approach to Serena in the remaining episodes of the season.
Ron and Serena’s Pen Fight Brings Out Their Competitive Sides
The smallest story of the episode turned out to be one of the funniest. Ron (David Alan Grier) and Serena get into a ridiculous argument over a pen. Ron insists the pen is his, praising its smooth click and perfect ink flow. Serena points out the faded letter “B” on the side, proving it belongs to her.
Ron refuses to accept this. He argues that the letter could have smudged off something else, and his attachment to the pen quickly becomes absurd. Ron even performs ASMR with the pen clicks into a documentary microphone, calling the sound “like butter.”
The conflict escalates when Ron hears Serena clicking the pen and confronts her. They both make up increasingly ridiculous stories about where the pen came from. During a medical emergency, Ron insists he needs that specific pen to create an alternate airway for a patient, rejecting the pink and purple option Serena offers. They end up physically fighting over it until Ron finally admits the truth. The pen helps him. He is a better doctor when using it. Serena gives it back, but the pen runs out of ink immediately. Both share a quiet moment of loss for the simple thing that made their work easier.
What Fans Are Saying About Episode 16
Viewers took to social media to share their thoughts on the episode. Many praised the pairing of Bruce and Matt, calling their ledge scene one of the best moments of the season. The physical comedy with Bruce getting stuck was a highlight for fans who enjoy watching his ego get knocked down a peg.
The Joyce and Ashley storyline also got attention, with fans appreciating how the show handled Joyce’s complicated emotions without making her look like a villain. Her decision to hire Ashley felt earned, and the scene where Alex pushed back against Joyce’s bad choice showed the strong friendship between the two characters.
Ron and Serena’s pen war was called “classic sitcom gold” by many, with David Alan Grier and Kahyun Kim getting praise for their comedic timing. The episode proved once again that even the smallest conflicts at St. Denis Medical can produce big laughs.
