The Bluth family first showed up on television screens back in November 2003. The sitcom Arrested Development told the story of a wealthy family who lost everything after the father, George Bluth Sr., went to prison for fraud. The show ran for three seasons on Fox before getting canceled in 2006. Netflix later brought it back for a fourth season in 2013 and a fifth season that ended in March 2019.
It has been years since the cameras last rolled on the dysfunctional family. The cast has since spread out across Hollywood, taking on new roles in big movies, award-winning dramas, and popular podcasts. Here is a look at where the main stars of Arrested Development are now.
Jason Bateman (Michael Bluth)
Jason Bateman played the role of Michael Bluth, the son who tried to keep his family together while running the business. After the original run of Arrested Development, Bateman became a major movie star. He appeared in hit comedies like Juno, Horrible Bosses, and Identity Thief.
Bateman later took on a dramatic role in the Netflix series Ozark. He played Marty Byrde, a financial advisor who moves his family to the Ozarks to launder money for a drug cartel. The show earned him Emmy nominations for acting and a win for directing.
He also started a popular podcast called SmartLess with his Arrested Development co-star Will Arnett and actor Sean Hayes. The show features the three hosts interviewing different celebrities each week. In early 2025, Bateman shared on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast that a movie version of Arrested Development was almost made at one point. He said actor Matt Damon wanted to be part of it, but now no one is interested in making the film.
Will Arnett (Gob Bluth)
Will Arnett played Gob, the egotistical magician and Michael’s older brother. Since the show ended, Arnett has become one of the most recognized voices in animation. He voiced the Lego Batman in The Lego Movie franchise and the main character in the Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman.
Arnett continues to work with his Arrested Development co-star Jason Bateman on the SmartLess podcast. The show has grown into a major media company, with live tours and a deal with SiriusXM.
Portia de Rossi (Lindsay Bluth Fünke)
Portia de Rossi played Lindsay, Michael’s twin sister who cared more about fashion and social causes than her family. Before Arrested Development, she was known for her role on Ally McBeal. After the show, she appeared in Nip/Tuck and Scandal.
De Rossi retired from acting after the Netflix revival seasons. She now focuses on her art collection and her work with her wife, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.
Michael Cera (George Michael Bluth)
Michael Cera played George Michael, Michael’s awkward son who had a crush on his cousin Maeby. After the show, Cera became a star in coming-of-age comedies. He appeared in Superbad, Juno, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
Cera returned to the spotlight in 2023 with a role in the blockbuster movie Barbie. He played Allan, a character who was Ken’s friend. He also appeared in the Hulu series Life & Beth.
Alia Shawkat (Maeby Fünke)
Alia Shawkat played Maeby, the scheming daughter of Lindsay and Tobias. She was only 14 years old when the show first aired. After Arrested Development, Shawkat became a lead in the TBS dark comedy Search Party, where she played a woman who gets caught up in a missing person case.
She also appeared in the acclaimed Apple TV+ series Severance and continues to work in independent films.
Tony Hale (Buster Bluth)
Tony Hale played Buster, the youngest Bluth son who had a close and unhealthy relationship with his mother. After Arrested Development, Hale found another famous role in the HBO political comedy Veep. He played Gary Walsh, the loyal assistant to Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character. The role earned him two Emmy Awards.
In 2024, Hale appeared in the Netflix comedy The Decameron, a show about nobles trying to survive the Black Death in the 1300s.
David Cross (Tobias Fünke)
David Cross played Tobias, Lindsay’s husband who was a “never-nude” and an aspiring actor. Cross was already a well-known comedian before the show, thanks to Mr. Show with Bob and David. After Arrested Development, he continued to work in comedy and drama. He had roles in Modern Family, What We Do in the Shadows, and Station Eleven.
In May 2024, Cross announced a large North American comedy tour called David Cross: The End of the Beginning of the End.

Jeffrey Tambor (George Bluth Sr. / Oscar Bluth)
Jeffrey Tambor played the dual roles of George Bluth Sr., the imprisoned family patriarch, and his hippie twin brother Oscar. After Arrested Development, Tambor starred in the Amazon series Transparent. He played Maura, a trans woman coming out later in life. The role earned him two Emmy Awards.
Tambor’s career faced challenges after accusations of sexual harassment came out during his time on Transparent. He denied the allegations but was dismissed from the show in 2018. During a 2018 interview with The New York Times, his co-star Jessica Walter spoke about Tambor’s behavior on the set of Arrested Development, saying he had been verbally abusive toward her. She stated:
“In like almost 60 years of working, I’ve never had anybody yell at me like that on a set.”
Jessica Walter (Lucille Bluth)
Jessica Walter played Lucille, the sharp-tongued, martini-drinking matriarch of the Bluth family. She had a long career before the show, including a starring role in Clint Eastwood’s 1971 film Play Misty for Me.
During and after Arrested Development, Walter also voiced the character Malory Archer on the FX animated series Archer. She continued working until her death in 2021 at the age of 80. The Archer team honored her in the season 12 finale.
The Show’s Streaming Future
Arrested Development currently streams on Netflix, which also produced the final two seasons. However, that will change soon. The show is scheduled to leave Netflix on March 15, 2026. The series originally had 53 episodes on Fox before Netflix added two more seasons, bringing the total to 84 episodes. Fans who want to watch or rewatch the show have until the middle of March to do so on the platform.
