The cast of Apple TV+’s hit comedy-drama Shrinking is opening up about working with Harrison Ford as the show’s third season prepares to wrap up. With the season finale set for April 8, the actors are sharing personal stories about their time with the 83-year-old screen legend.
The series, which follows a group of therapists navigating life, grief, and complicated relationships, has given Ford one of his most praised roles in recent years as Dr. Paul Rhoades. His co-stars say the experience of acting alongside him has been unforgettable.
Lukita Maxwell Calls Working With Harrison Ford ‘Such a Gift’
Lukita Maxwell, who plays Paul’s granddaughter Alice on the show, shared her thoughts about Ford during a recent interview. The 24-year-old actress did not hold back when talking about what it means to share scenes with the Indiana Jones star.
“This season, as with every season, [working with Harrison] is such a gift,” Maxwell told DECIDER. “It will always be something I will look back on and just be in awe of. His presence is insane. His relationship with cast, with crew, with camera. He’s been doing it forever. He loves it so much. And the care and attention he has for everything — he’s just the best. He’s the best of the best.”
Maxwell’s words reflect a common feeling among the cast members who have worked with Ford across all three seasons of the Apple TV series.
Christa Miller Shares a Sweet Personal Memory About Ford
Christa Miller, who plays Liz on the show, recalled a touching moment from filming that involved a personal keepsake. She described how Ford’s thoughtfulness showed up in a small but meaningful way on set.
“I had to give him a rock on the show, which is from my personal collection,” Miller told DECIDER. “They used my one of my rocks that I had worked on and tumbled and was from Malibu. And when we finished the scene, Harrison said, ‘Would it be OK if I kept the rock?’ It was really meaningful to me. And it’s why this show works. We have all these meaningful relationships with each other.”
Miller also mentioned the playful dynamic she has with Ford on set, saying, “I love working with Harrison, even though he teases me endlessly, and I give him grief endlessly.”
Luke Tennie Reflects on a Powerful Scene With Ford
Luke Tennie, who plays Sean, shared his thoughts about a specific scene he did with Ford in season three. The moment carried emotional weight for both characters.
“There is one in particular, it’s kind of like a graduation scene between Harrison and myself — Paul and Sean — and he kind of let Sean know, ‘I think you’re going to be all right when I’m not here, when this disease takes over,’” Tennie recalled. “And I think Sean understands that Paul’s right. He does have all the tools and the skills necessary to continue his life and grow in a responsible way.”
The scene highlights the depth of Ford’s performance as Paul, a character dealing with Parkinson’s disease while trying to help others navigate their own struggles.
Jason Segel Says Ford Has Become a Friend and Mentor
Jason Segel, who co-created the show and stars as Jimmy, has developed a close bond with Ford during their time working together. Segel told ABC Audio that the relationship has grown beyond just acting.
“It’s the honor of a lifetime as an actor and all that,” Segel said. “I’m still three years in, I have moments where I’re pinching myself, like can you believe it? The coolest part though is that he’s my friend, you know? And he gives me great advice and we have real talks and I feel like that’s been the best takeaway of this relationship.”
Segel also shared the kind of advice Ford gives him, especially when he is being too hard on himself.
“Harrison Ford has been a real voice in my ear of telling me, ‘Hey kid, you’re doing great. I think it’s time for you to tell that other voice to go hit the road,’” Segel said. “And that’s actually been a real relief.”
Segel added that acting alongside Ford helps him put things in perspective. “Whatever voice is trying to tell me I could have done better is being overruled by reality.”
Michael J. Fox’s Emotional Connection to Ford’s Performance
Michael J. Fox joined the cast this season as a patient with Parkinson’s who interacts with Ford’s character. Fox, who has lived with Parkinson’s since 1991, told Vanity Fair that Ford’s performance moved him deeply.
“That’s one thing that’s amazing about Harrison. I don’t have to convince him I have Parkinson’s, but he had to convince me he had Parkinson’s,” Fox said. “What I wasn’t prepared for was how much of his own understanding of the disease he brought to it. I mean, I recognized Parkinson’s in his eyes. The things I was feeling, I recognized in the way he was expressing himself. I was just brought to tears by it.”
Ford responded by calling Fox “generous, supportive, open, just a wonderful person,” adding, “It’s a daunting disease and also a daunting job to represent it in an appropriate way. It was a very important experience for me to have.”
