Jennie’s new music video for “ZEN” has ignited a debate among fans, with some accusing it of borrowing heavily from XG’sHOWLING” music video. The controversy centers around several visual similarities between the two videos, leading to accusations of plagiarism and sparking discussions about creative inspiration versus outright copying.

The music video for “ZEN,” released on January 24th, quickly garnered attention for its artistic visuals. However, eagle-eyed viewers noticed striking resemblances to XG’s “HOWLING,” particularly in certain shots and stylistic choices. These similarities include Jennie’s appearance with large, swan-like wings, a half-owl headpiece, a prominent fire scene, and even certain dance moves performed by the backup dancers.

Fans React to the Similarities

The shared visuals have divided fans. Some have criticized the perceived lack of originality, with one fan commenting, “This looks like totally copy-paste, even they work with the same director.” Others have defended Jennie, arguing that the overall concepts and narratives of the two music videos are distinct, and that similar visual elements do not necessarily constitute plagiarism. Some fans also pointed out the different themes: XG’s futuristic concept grounded in Japanese culture, versus Jennie’s “ZEN” which focuses on self-belief and achieving one’s goals. They also argued that the timeline makes outright copying unlikely, as “HOWLING” was released in November, making it improbable that the concept would be reused in Jennie’s video so soon after.

The director of both music videos, Choi Gi Seok, has faced the brunt of the criticism. Some fans have called his work “lazy” and questioned his professional ethics. Others have defended Jennie, suggesting she might not have been aware of the extent of the similarities.

Despite the controversy, “ZEN” has enjoyed considerable popularity, serving as a pre-release track for Jennie’s upcoming solo album, Ruby, scheduled for release on March 7th. The debate, however, continues, raising questions about the line between inspiration and imitation in the world of music video production.
