The world got its first official look at Prime Video’s upcoming series Young Sherlock on Tuesday night, as the cast stepped out for a glamorous world premiere along London’s Southbank. The event was a true family affair, with leading man Hero Fiennes Tiffin walking the red carpet alongside his real-life uncle, Joseph Fiennes, who plays his father in the show.
But the biggest talking point of the evening came when Hero revealed the private advice he received from another big-screen Sherlock: Henry Cavill. The 28-year-old actor dished on the guidance Cavill gave him about taking on the iconic role, setting social media abuzz just days before the series hits streaming.
Henry Cavill’s Wise Words to Hero Fiennes Tiffin About Playing Sherlock
Hero Fiennes Tiffin, known for his leading role in the After film franchise, stepped out at the Queen Elizabeth Hall looking sharp in a beige suit paired with a red striped tie. During interviews on the carpet, he shared details of a conversation he had with Henry Cavill, who played the detective in the Netflix films Enola Holmes and also starred alongside Hero in the 2024 action movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
Hero explained that he reached out to Cavill specifically for advice before filming began on Young Sherlock. He told reporters, including those from Deadline, that the advice was simple but profound.
“I spoke to Henry Cavill, actually, and specifically because he’s worked with Guy [Ritchie] a number of times and we worked together on a film called The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare. I had a slightly smaller role, and he gave me some good advice, which is, ‘A man who worries before it’s necessary, worries more than necessary.’”
Hero admitted that applying the advice is easier said than done, but he took it to heart before stepping into the shoes of a young, rebellious Sherlock Holmes. He also mentioned that he wanted to pick Cavill’s brain since the actor has worked multiple times with the series’ director, Guy Ritchie, who was also present at the premiere.
Joseph Fiennes on Working With Nephew Hero: ‘A Real Present’
While Hero was getting tips from Cavill, he was also getting on-screen support from his own family. Joseph Fiennes, 55, who stars as Silas Holmes (Sherlock’s father), walked the carpet in a casual dark brown suede jacket. He spoke emotionally about the experience of working alongside his nephew.
Joseph admitted he initially had nerves about the casting, fearing he might only be hired because of the family connection. However, those fears quickly disappeared once he got into the character.
“I was a bit nervous that they just wanted me in because I am a family member. But actually, I was really drawn to the complexity of my character,” Joseph explained to the Press Association. “To work with a family member that you’ve held in your arms as a baby – and to see him grow into a great, wonderful leading man with such energy, such talent, and actually off-camera, such grace… for me, it was a real present to work with him.”
Hero echoed those feelings, telling HELLO! Magazine at the event that working with his uncle was a dream come true. He admitted to struggling with “imposter syndrome” at the start of the job, and those feelings actually spiked when Joseph first arrived on set four months into filming.
“It was funny, at the start of any job I have a lot of self-doubt, and imposter syndrome,” Hero shared. “Then Joe came onto set about four months into shooting and all of that went in the bin and out the window. Matthew Parkhill, our showrunner, said that he saw me shrink to a much younger version of myself, but Joe’s so supportive and such an incredible actor.”
Hero added that it was a privilege to work with Joseph, noting that he has always looked up to him not just as an uncle, but as a “sensational actor.”
A Star-Studded Premiere With Guy Ritchie and the Cast
The event at London’s Southbank Centre was transformed to evoke the spirit of Sherlock’s world, drawing a huge crowd of fans and photographers. Director Guy Ritchie joined the cast, which included Dónal Finn (who plays James Moriarty), Zine Tseng, and Max Irons (who plays Sherlock’s brother, Mycroft Holmes).
Dónal Finn spoke about the dynamic between Hero and Joseph on set, telling HELLO! that it was “sweet” to watch. He noted that both he and Hero found themselves “in awe” of Joseph’s acting skills, describing him as a “forensic, and yet really spontaneous, electric actor.”
Showrunner Matthew Parkhill also revealed a touching behind-the-scenes detail. He was initially curious about how the uncle-nephew dynamic would play out. After meeting Joseph for coffee, he was so moved by the actor’s love for Hero—including stories of doing magic tricks for him when Hero was young—that he wrote those elements into the script for episode seven.
What is ‘Young Sherlock’ About?
Young Sherlock is based on the best-selling Young Sherlock Holmes book series by Andrew Lane. The series reimagines Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective as a 19-year-old student at Oxford University. This version of Sherlock is described as “raw and unfiltered,” a disgraced young man who gets pulled into a murder investigation that threatens his freedom.
The official synopsis teases that Sherlock’s first case will unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy, setting the stage for his transformation into the legendary sleuth. The story unfolds in a vibrant, action-packed version of 1870s Victorian England.
This marks a reunion of sorts for Guy Ritchie with the Sherlock Holmes property, having previously directed the successful films Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) starring Robert Downey Jr. Ritchie directed the first two episodes of the series and serves as an executive producer.
