The 29th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) kicked off with Netflix’s “Uprising,“ a film set during a turbulent period dominated by a strict class system. The film explores the personal conflict between two characters, Jongryeo (played by Park Jungmin) and his servant Cheonyeong (played by Kang Dongwon).
However, the choice to feature a film from an OTT platform as the festival’s opening has stirred discussions, especially since BIFF traditionally showcases independent films. During a press conference held on October 2 at the Cultural Hall of Shinsegae Centum City in Busan, Park Dosin, acting executive director of BIFF, addressed these concerns. He emphasized that while the festival remains dedicated to independent films, “Uprising” was chosen because of its high level of quality and broad appeal.
Press Conference Insights
Several cast members, including Kang Dongwon, Park Jungmin, Cha Seungwon, Kim Sinrok, and Jin Seonkyu, along with the film’s director Kim Sangman, attended the press conference. Kim Sangman spoke about returning to directing after a seven-year hiatus and was proud to have his film open the prestigious festival.
The story is set during the Imjin War, with Jongryeo, the son of a noble family, and his servant Cheonyeong facing each other in battle after a deep misunderstanding leads to betrayal. Cheonyeong seeks freedom from servitude, while Jongryeo becomes a royal bodyguard. Their relationship unravels after a revolt, and they meet on the battlefield as enemies.
Kim Sangman credited Park Chanwook for helping shape the film’s script. Kang Dongwon shared a memorable experience working with Park, who visited the set and offered detailed advice on acting and pronunciation.
Action-Packed Performances
The film features intense sword-fighting scenes, with Kang Dongwon portraying Cheonyeong with raw, emotional energy, while Park Jungmin took a different approach to his character’s fighting style. Park explained how his character’s swordsmanship was heavier and more refined, fitting his role as the king’s bodyguard.
The climax of the film involves a confrontation between Jongryeo, Cheonyeong, and an enemy commander, played by Jung Seongil. This scene was set in a foggy environment to symbolize the confusion and emotional buildup between the characters.
Discussion on OTT Platforms at BIFF
The inclusion of a Netflix production as the opening film sparked a conversation about the future direction of BIFF. Park Dosin addressed concerns, stating that although it was a departure from tradition, the festival remains committed to supporting independent films.
