The Gang is back, and they have outdone themselves in the most disturbing way possible. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia returned for its 18th season on August 17, 2026, with a two-episode premiere that left viewers both horrified and laughing. The first episode, titled “Frank Marries a Corpse,” delivered exactly what the name promises — Frank Reynolds (Danny DeVito) actually marries a dead body. But the season opener also carried a deeper meaning as the show honored the late Lynne Marie Stewart, who played Charlie’s mother Bonnie Kelly and passed away in February 2025 at age 78.

The two-episode debut, which also included “Dennis and Dee Don’t Get Rich,” pulled double duty by delivering the show’s signature gross-out humor while giving Stewart a fitting, chaotic sendoff that only It’s Always Sunny could pull off.

Frank’s Wedding Takes a Dark Turn

Season 18 picks up right where Season 17 left off. In the previous season finale, Frank appeared on a version of The Golden Bachelor and chose Sam (Carol Kane), a billionaire poultry heiress, as his bride-to-be. The new season opens on the morning of their wedding at Paddy’s Pub.

The episode starts with Frank getting cold feet as he prepares to marry Sam. Dennis tries to fix his tie while Mac suggests a double knot. Meanwhile, Dee is determined to stop the wedding. She tries to scare Sam off by bringing in The Waitress, Artemis, and Gail the Snail to share terrible stories about Frank.

But things take a shocking turn when Sam complains about a headache and neck pain. The night before the wedding, Frank and Sam had sex in a bacteria-filled creek. While Frank only got sick, Sam’s infection turned much worse — flesh-eating bacteria ate through her spinal cord, killing her before the ceremony could happen.

Dee and Dennis Drag a Corpse Down the Aisle

When Dee goes to wake Sam up on the wedding day, she finds her dead. But instead of calling off the wedding, Dee and Dennis hatch a plan to get Frank married to Sam anyway — so they can get their hands on Sam’s money.

Dee walks Sam’s corpse down the aisle like a puppet while Charlie performs a song about his dead mother. The ceremony continues, and Frank officially marries Sam’s dead body. But when Frank leans in to kiss his bride, her head falls off. The moment was so shocking that even longtime fans gasped.

The Tribute to Lynne Marie Stewart

While the main plot revolved around Frank’s disturbing wedding, the second episode focused on saying goodbye to Bonnie Kelly, Charlie’s mother, played by Lynne Marie Stewart.

Lynne Marie Stewart had been a recurring presence on the show since Season 1, appearing in 18 episodes across the series’ run. She was one of the few genuinely warm characters in the Always Sunny universe, and her passing left a big hole in the show’s family.

The tribute began in the first episode when Charlie shows up carrying an urn containing his mother’s ashes. He tries to include Bonnie’s ashes in Frank’s wedding ceremony, but Dennis shuts down the idea. Charlie also wants to perform his “dead woman in the rook” song as a tribute, which Dennis also rejects.

But Charlie gets his chance anyway — by mistake, at the worst possible moment. He plays the song with Bonnie’s ashes on his keyboard, creating a messy, emotional scene.

The second episode, “Dennis and Dee Don’t Get Rich,” follows Charlie and Frank as they plan a proper memorial for Bonnie during the annual Mummers Parade. Charlie has Bonnie’s house remodeled to sell it, hoping to pay for funerals for both Bonnie and Sam.

Charlie dresses as a Mummer, carrying pictures of Bonnie and Sam through the parade. Then Frank arrives with a cannon — and fires Bonnie’s ashes and Sam’s body into the river. It was twisted, chaotic, and somehow felt like the perfect goodbye for a character who always matched the show’s freak.

“This is how I’ll remember her,” Rob McElhenney wrote in a social media post honoring Stewart.

The Gang’s Greed Leads to More Disaster

The second episode follows Dennis and Dee as they try to cash in on Sam’s fortune. They go to Uncle Jack (Andrew Friedman) to get the money transferred, but he demands a marriage certificate with Sam’s signature and thumbprint.

Dennis and Dee return to Sam’s body to get her thumbprint. After realizing they forgot a pen, they decide to cut off her thumb and take it with them. But Uncle Jack tells them the thumbprint doesn’t match Sam’s — they took the wrong thumb.

Things get even worse when Frank takes Sam’s remains. At the funeral, a cannon blasts Sam’s corpse, leaving Dennis and Dee without any usable fingers to forge signatures.

A New Character Steals the Show

Amid all the chaos, the premiere introduced a new fan-favorite character: Sherman, a ventriloquist dummy. Sherman belongs to Uncle Jack, but Mac immediately becomes obsessed with the dummy when he sees it.

Mac uses Sherman as a way to come out to his mother, completely denying his sexuality in front of her while speaking through the dummy. The moment was hilarious and unexpected, with fans already hoping Sherman returns later in the season.
