The internet never forgets. Old social media posts from former NFL insider Dianna Russini are back in the spotlight as new photos showing her kissing New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel continue to spread online. The resurfaced tweet, originally posted in 2021, has added another strange layer to a controversy that has already cost Russini her job and forced Vrabel to seek counseling.

The story started with pictures of the pair at a resort in Sedona, Arizona. But after more images appeared—this time showing them kissing at a bar in New York City back in March 2020—fans and critics began digging through Russini’s past posts on X (formerly Twitter). What they found has sparked a fresh wave of online discussion.

“Who Are the Best Michaels”: The Tweet That Raised Eyebrows

On August 11, 2021, just days after giving birth to her first son, Russini shared a lighthearted post. Looking at her newborn, she asked her followers a simple question about NFL history.

“Keep looking at my almost 4 day old son Michael while trying to figure out who are the best Michaels to ever play and coach in the NFL?”

At the time, the post seemed like harmless fun from a new mother who also happened to be a sports journalist. But four years later, the wording has taken on a completely different meaning.

The reason? Mike Vrabel’s full first name is Michael. His full name is Michael George Vrabel. Russini named her son Michael. The timing of the post, plus the recently released photos showing the two together in 2020, has led many to question whether there was more to the relationship than anyone knew.

Russini has since deactivated her X account as the resurfaced tweet continues to circulate.

The Timeline: From a 2020 Bar to a 2024 Casino

The controversy did not start with the old tweet. It began when Page Six published photos on April 7, 2026, showing Russini and Vrabel holding hands and hugging at the Ambiente, an adults-only resort in Sedona, Arizona. The images were taken on March 28, during the NFL’s annual league meetings in nearby Phoenix.

Both Vrabel and Russini quickly denied any wrongdoing. Vrabel called the photos a “completely innocent interaction,” while Russini claimed they were just two members of a group of six people hanging out.

But the story did not go away. On April 23, Page Six released more photos. These were different. One set showed Russini and Vrabel kissing at a bar in New York City on March 11, 2020. Another photo, obtained by TMZ, showed the pair at a casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, on January 31, 2024.

An eyewitness at the 2020 bar gathering told Page Six: “They were kissing and they were all over each other. He had a ring on.” Another source added: “They were having a glorious time. They were [giving each other] pecks, a bunch of pecks, constantly.”

These new photos contradicted the earlier claims that the Arizona meeting was just a casual hangout with friends.

The Fallout: Resignation, Counseling, and a Team Statement

The damage from the photos has been severe.

Dianna Russini resigned from The Athletic on April 14. In her resignation letter, which she posted online, she blamed the “media frenzy” and said she had no interest in a “public inquiry.” She wrote: “I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career.”

Before her resignation, The Athletic had opened an investigation into her work and the nature of her relationship with Vrabel.

Mike Vrabel faced his own consequences. On April 21, he held a press conference where he admitted to having “difficult conversations” with his family and the team. He said: “What I can promise you is that my family, this organization, the team, the staff, the coaches, everybody – our fans, most importantly – will get the best version of me going forward.”

He then announced he would seek counseling and miss the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft.

The New England Patriots released a statement supporting their coach. They said: “The New England Patriots fully support Mike Vrabel’s decision to prioritize his family first, as well as his own well-being. Mike has been open with us about his commitment to being the best version of himself.”

The NFL has confirmed that Vrabel is not under investigation for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Fan Reactions: Social Media Loses It Over the Coincidence

As the old tweet spread, fans had a lot to say. Many pointed out how strange it looked now.

“The way she named her son Michael is crazy work,” one user wrote on X.

Another commented: “This did not age well. In hindsight we really should’ve picked up on this quicker.”

“She named her son Mike?? Omggg man,” added a third. “This is diabolical,” said a fourth.

However, it is important to note that “Michael” is one of the most common names in the United States. There is no confirmed evidence linking Russini’s choice of her son’s name to Mike Vrabel.

Unverified Paternity Claims Spread Online

The resurfaced tweet has also fueled baseless rumors online. Some social media accounts have called for a DNA or paternity test for Russini’s son Michael. One fake account pretending to be an “NFL insider” even claimed Vrabel was ordered to take a test.

These claims are completely false. No credible news outlet or official source has reported any such thing. The rumors are simply internet gossip that started because Russini’s son shares a first name with the Patriots coach.
