The first season of ‘Rooster’ just wrapped on May 10, 2026, and HBO is already pushing the creators to get Season 2 out in record time. The comedy series starring Steve Carell has become the network’s biggest comedy debut in nearly 11 years, pulling in 2.4 million viewers within just three days of its premiere. Now the team behind the show is working fast to deliver more.

Co-creator Bill Lawrence revealed that the writers have already broken the first four episodes of the upcoming season. HBO wants the new season on air within a year or less, which means fans could expect new episodes as early as spring 2027.
Season 1 Finale Left Major Mess for Ludlow College
The finale titled “Songs for Raisa” wrapped up with several big changes at the fictional Ludlow College. Greg Russo (Steve Carell) was ready to leave after thinking he gave his last lecture, but a surprise party organized by Dylan (Danielle Deadwyler) and student Tommy convinced him to stay another semester.
But the biggest shakeup involves Archie Bates (Phil Dunster). The Russian studies professor lost everything in the final episode. His wife Katie (Charly Clive) asked for a divorce after briefly getting back together with him, and his pregnant graduate student Sunny (Lauren Tsai) left town without him. Both women finally cut ties with the narcissistic professor.
Lawrence told Deadline: “For me, there’s no other ending of the first year. I would be so upset, as someone that I hope has grown to like and empathize with both Sunny and Katie, if either one of them were still tethered to this guy.”
Greg and Dylan’s Relationship Takes Center Stage in Season 2
The unresolved tension between Greg and Dylan will be impossible to ignore when the show returns. Throughout Season 1, the two professors built a close friendship that often felt like it could turn into something more. The finale had Dylan calling herself Greg’s “good friend,” but both showrunners admit the door is wide open.
Lawrence and Tarses actually disagree on where the story should go. Lawrence said he believes in male-female friendships staying platonic. Tarses joked, “I’m against male-female friendship! I like romance!”
The writers teased that Dylan’s personal life will finally get explored in Season 2. She once mentioned telling another professor “I love you” and taking it back. Lawrence confirmed viewers will likely meet that person in the new episodes.
Tarses said: “The undercurrent between Greg and Dylan is not accidental. Every single friendship carries a lot of weight when there’s a possibility it could become something more.”
The show will also deal with Greg’s messy home life. His ex-wife Beth (Connie Britton) is taking over as college president, pushing out current president Walt (John C. McGinley) . Greg turned down Beth’s advances in the finale, showing how much he has grown since arriving at Ludlow.

Archie’s Future Looks Dark Before Any Redemption
Phil Dunster’s character Archie hit rock bottom in the Season 1 finale, but the writers say he is not done falling yet. Both Katie and Sunny leaving him was part of a plan that never changed during the writing process.
Lawrence told Dunster directly that there is “no redeemable path for his character until he truly bottoms out.” He added, “I wouldn’t say he’s there just yet, but he’s getting close.”
Archie will remain on the show as a regular cast member. But Season 2 will likely show him more isolated than ever. The writers have confirmed they want to explore Sunny’s character more after her exit, especially after Lauren Tsai’s final scenes hinted at a side of her the audience has not seen before.
HBO’s Fast Timeline and What Fans Know So Far
Season 2 will have 10 episodes, matching the first season’s length. The show has already secured a $21 million California tax credit, showing HBO’s serious investment in the series.
Lawrence explained why the writers could move so quickly: “We’ve broken the first four episodes. HBO wants it on within a year or less. They’ve got us grinding, so we’ve been at it for a while.”
The show’s success numbers back up the network’s urgency. The first four episodes averaged 5.8 million U.S. viewers, making it HBO’s most-watched freshman comedy in over a decade. The series has consistently ranked among HBO Max’s Daily Top 3.
The creative team is already deep into planning storyboards and episode arcs. Lawrence joked the show now has “somewhere close to 600 characters” to balance because “it is a college after all”.
