The new Spider-Noir series starring Nicolas Cage has arrived, bringing a completely different take on the classic web-slinger. Set in a gritty 1930s New York, this version of Spider-Man does not come from a radioactive spider bite like the Peter Parker most people know. Instead, his powers come from a much stranger, mystical source. The show premiered on May 25, 2026, on MGM+ and is now streaming globally on Prime Video starting May 27, 2026. Available in both black-and-white and color versions, the series follows Ben Reilly, a washed-up private investigator who also happens to be the city’s only superhero.
How a Mystical Spider Idol Creates the Noir Hero
In the comics and the new series, the origin of Spider-Noir is tied to an ancient relic. Peter Parker (in the original comics) was not bitten by a lab spider. Instead, he was investigating a smuggling ring when a crate broke open, revealing a spider-god idol. A mystical, poisonous spider crawled out and bit him. This gave him visions of a spider-deity who promised him power before he slipped into a coma and woke up inside a cocoon with brand new abilities.
Unlike the standard Spider-Man story where Uncle Ben dies because Peter lets a robber go, Spider-Noir still suffers a deep loss. In the comics, the Goblin’s gang kills Uncle Ben, pushing Peter to become a violent vigilante. In the show’s version, Ben Reilly is the one bitten. This version is older and more broken, trying to suppress the violent instincts that came with the spider bite.
Breaking Down the Spider-Noir Powers
Nicolas Cage’s character, known simply as “The Spider,” has all the standard abilities of Spider-Man but with a darker, more organic twist. Here are the core powers he displays in the series:
- Superhuman Strength and Agility: He can lift heavy objects, punch through walls, and leap across 1930s rooftops with ease.
- Organic Webbing: Unlike Tom Holland or Tobey Maguire’s versions (who sometimes use web-shooters), Spider-Noir shoots natural webs directly from his wrists. The webbing is often depicted as black and sticky, used to trap enemies.
- Spider-Sense: He has a “spider-sense” that warns him of danger, though in this gritty universe, it feels more like a paranoid instinct than a clear alarm.
- Wall-Crawling: Just like the classic hero, he can stick to and climb walls.
However, there is one major difference in this version. The trailer hints that the spider bite did not just give Ben Reilly power; it gave him violent impulses. He mentions having to “suppress” these urges, suggesting the mystical spider might have a curse attached to it.

A big part of the Spider-Noir character is that he breaks the typical hero rules. He carries a pistol. In a world full of corrupt cops and mobsters during the Great Depression, he relies on detective skills and firearms to survive. He wears a mask with goggles, a leather trench coat, and a fedora, mixing a superhero look with a 1930s private eye aesthetic.
