Fans of Studio Ghibli in the United States and other English-speaking countries will finally get to read a key piece of the studio’s history. The Studio Ghibli Chronicles, a behind-the-scenes book edited by studio co-founder Toshio Suzuki, is coming out in English this September after being available only in Japan for nearly three years.
The book offers a rare inside look at how the legendary animation studio created its most beloved films. Viz Media announced the English release, giving international audiences their first chance to read Suzuki’s first-person account of working alongside Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.
The Studio Ghibli Chronicles English Release Date and Price
The Studio Ghibli Chronicles will arrive in bookstores on September 22, 2026. Fans can pre-order the book now from major retailers including Amazon and Barnes & Noble. The current price sits at $30 for the English version.
The original Japanese edition came out in 2023. English-speaking fans have waited three years to read Suzuki’s complete account of the studio’s history. The book covers everything from the early days of Nausicaรค of the Valley of the Wind through the Oscar-winning success of The Boy and the Heron.
Viz Media’s official social media account described the book as: “This inside look at the legendary animation studio offers new insights into the production of all Ghibli films to date, including the Academy Award winner The Boy and the Heron.”
What Is Inside The Studio Ghibli Chronicles Book
Toshio Suzuki has served as the producer for nearly every Studio Ghibli theatrical release. His position gives him a unique vantage point on the studio’s creative process. The book shares his first-person anecdotes about filmmaking, early creative concepts, studio life, and final production details.
One Japanese book blog, honnavi25, reviewed several chapters and shared details about what readers can expect. Chapter 11, called “The Record-Breaking Hit Spirited Away,” reveals a creative clash between director Hayao Miyazaki and animation director Masashi Ando during the making of the Oscar-winning film.
The blog notes that the iconic visuals of the Spirited Away bathhouse and the animation of Haku’s dragon form came out of this creative battle between the two artists. These kinds of behind-the-scenes conflicts rarely get discussed publicly, making the book valuable for fans who want to understand how Ghibli films actually get made.
Why This English Release Matters for Studio Ghibli Fans
Studio Ghibli has produced 23 feature films since its founding in 1985. While many books and documentaries have covered Miyazaki’s career, the actual working process inside the studio has remained largely mysterious. The Studio Ghibli Chronicles changes that by offering direct access to Suzuki’s memories.
The book details the studio’s evolution from the success of its very first film through its latest Oscar-winning feature. Readers get rare insight into four decades of filmmaking that shaped modern animation.
Much of the book’s detailed behind-the-scenes material has stayed inaccessible to English-reading audiences since 2023. This September release marks the first opportunity for most international fans to read Suzuki’s full account directly, rather than relying on secondhand summaries or translations of selected passages.

Where to Stream Studio Ghibli Movies While Waiting for the Book
Fans who want to watch Ghibli films while waiting for The Studio Ghibli Chronicles can find them on different streaming services depending on their location. In the United States, Max (formerly HBO Max) holds the exclusive streaming rights to the entire Studio Ghibli catalog. Subscribers can watch all 23 films on demand with both English dubs and original Japanese audio with subtitles.
In Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, India, and other countries outside the US and Japan, Netflix carries the complete Studio Ghibli collection. The streaming giant offers the films in multiple languages with various subtitle options.
