The Star Wars galaxy is experiencing a fresh wave of attention. The Mandalorian and Grogu movie is bringing fans back to the streaming service. As viewers prepare for the new film, older favorites are climbing back up the charts. One show, in particular, is getting a second look from audiences.
Obi-Wan Kenobi, the 2022 limited series starring Ewan McGregor, has returned to the Disney+ Top 10 TV shows in the United States. The show currently sits at the number 10 spot, just under Zootopia+. Other Star Wars titles like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord are also finding places on the list. This streaming success shows that fans are still interested in the time period between the prequels and the original trilogy.
The Showโs Story and Where It Fits in the Star Wars Timeline
Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Ewan McGregor returns as the Jedi Master who is hiding on Tatooine. He spends his days watching over a young Luke Skywalker from a distance. The story forces him out of hiding when a young Princess Leia (played by Vivien Lyra Blair) gets kidnapped. He has to go on a rescue mission across the galaxy.
The series also deals with the emotional pain Obi-Wan carries. He lost his best friend and student, Anakin Skywalker, to the dark side. Hayden Christensen returns as Darth Vader in the show. Their rematch became one of the most talked-about moments of the series. The show adds important backstory to the time gap between the prequel movies and A New Hope.
Mixed Reviews From Fans But Strong Critical Praise
Since its release, Obi-Wan Kenobi has received different reactions from critics and regular viewers. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show holds an 82% score from critics. The audience score, however, is lower at 61%. This gap shows that the show was divisive when it first came out. Some fans loved the nostalgia and the return of McGregor and Christensen. Others felt the pacing was slow or the production value looked cheap in certain scenes.
Despite the mixed fan reactions, critics praised the show heavily. Collider critic Maggie Lovitt gave the first episode an “A+” grade. She said the premiere gave a strong re-introduction to Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Prequel Era. Other outlets like ScreenRant said the series found a good balance of nostalgia, fan service, and fresh storytelling. CBR noted that while the pacing was slow in the first episode, the storytelling improved compared to The Book of Boba Fett.
Will There Be More Obi-Wan Kenobi?
Fans have been asking for a second season since the first one ended. Ewan McGregor himself has been very open about wanting to return to the role. During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, he spoke about the possibility.
โI have no news to tell. Iโm waiting for the call. I donโt know that itโs happening.โ
He also told GQ magazine that he hopes the show continues. Hayden Christensen has also said he wants to come back as Darth Vader. The actors are ready, but Lucasfilm has been quiet. Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, has confirmed that they have not had official talks about a second season. She did say they are keeping the door open for possibilities.
There were rumors in mid-2025 that a second season was in development. A scooper named Daniel Richtman (via The Direct) claimed that Lucasfilm was moving forward with another season. However, no official announcement has come from Disney or Lucasfilm. The physical media release of the show is labeled as “The Complete Series.” This suggests that the studio originally planned it as a one-time event. But streaming numbers like the current chart position could change their minds.
