ABC’s 20/20 aired a special episode titled “Stalking Samantha: 13 Years of Terror” on June 12, 2026, detailing the horrific true story of Samantha Stites. For over a decade, a man named Christopher Thomas stalked her relentlessly before finally kidnapping her in 2022. The two-hour special features Samantha’s firsthand account of the night she was abducted and held captive in a custom-built torture chamber.
Here is the complete timeline of the case.
2011: The Stalking Begins
The nightmare began in 2011 when Samantha Stites was a student at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. She met Christopher Thomas, who was her senior, through a Christian group on campus. What started as a polite acquaintance quickly turned into an obsession.
Thomas began bombarding Samantha with messages and showing up uninvited to her workplace, the gym, the grocery store, and even her soccer games. As the harassment escalated, Samantha obtained a Personal Protection Order (PPO) against him. However, this legal document failed to stop his behavior, and when the order expired in 2020, the stalking resumed.
2022: A Plea for Help Denied
Fearing for her safety after Thomas reappeared, Samantha attempted to secure another Protection Order in July 2022. According to court documents, the judge denied her request. Unbeknownst to Samantha, the danger was far closer than she realized. Thomas had placed a GPS tracker on her car, allowing him to monitor her every move.
October 2022: The Kidnapping and Escape
On the morning of October 7, 2022, Thomas broke into Samantha’s home in Elk Rapids, Michigan. He forced her into her own car and drove her to a remote storage unit he had prepared.
Inside the unit, Thomas had constructed a soundproof bunker equipped with food, toiletries, and restraints. Samantha was held captive there for approximately 13 hours. Police later described the space as a custom-built torture chamber. During this time, she was sexually assaulted. He reportedly planned to keep her for two weeks.
Using her intelligence, Samantha managed to trick Thomas into letting her go by promising she would not report the crime to the police. As soon as she was freed, she immediately contacted law enforcement.
