The upcoming God of War series on Prime Video has hit a major problem. The actor playing Kratos, Ryan Hurst, got hurt while filming a stunt. He tore his bicep and needs surgery. Because his recovery will take too long, the studios have decided to recast the role. This means a new actor will play Kratos.
Production has stopped in Vancouver, where the show was being filmed. The team now plans to start filming again in mid-October 2026. But the new actor will have to reshoot all the scenes that were already completed.
Ryan Hurst’s Injury and Recovery
Ryan Hurst was cast as Kratos in January 2026. He worked very hard to get into the right shape for the role. Reports say he put on 40 lbs of muscle to play the Spartan warrior. He had been filming for months before the accident happened.
The injury occurred in late June 2026 while Hurst was performing a stunt. He tore his bicep and had to undergo surgery. The recovery time for this type of injury is usually four to six months. Some sources say it could take up to a year to get back to full strength.
Producers first hoped to have Hurst back on set by mid-August 2026. But the recovery process is too long for that timeline. Reports say Hurst would not be safe to return to the role until 2027. The production schedule could not wait that long. So Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television made the difficult choice to recast.
Why the Show Must Recast Kratos
One of the main reasons for the recasting is the young actor playing Atreus. Callum Vinson plays Kratos’s son in the show. He is a child actor and will grow up quickly. If production waited until Hurst recovered, Vinson would look too different. This would make it hard to use the footage that was already filmed.
Four episodes of the show had already been fully completed before the injury. But these episodes will now be reshot with the new actor. Most of the existing footage will be unusable.
The decision to recast a lead actor in the middle of production is very rare. One similar case happened with Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop. The lead actor John Cho injured his knee during filming. The production shut down for seven to nine months. But that show continued with Cho in the role. God of War has taken a different path by replacing its star.
The Cast of God of War
The God of War series has a strong cast of actors. Here are the main cast members:
Mandy Patinkin plays Odin, the All-Father of the Norse gods.
Ed Skrein plays Baldur, the god of light.
Ólafur Darri Ólafsson plays Thor, the god of thunder.
Teresa Palmer plays Sif, Thor’s wife.
Max Parker plays Heimdall, the watchman of the gods.
Alastair Duncan plays Mimir, the smartest man alive. Duncan also voiced Mimir in the video games.
Danny Woodburn plays Brok and Jeff Gulka plays Sindri. These are the dwarf brothers who help Kratos.
The cast also includes Louis Cunningham as Modi, Sonya Walger as Freya, and Island Austin as Thrud.
The show was created by Ronald D. Moore. He is known for his work on Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

The Story of God of War
The series is based on the popular video game franchise. It follows Kratos and his son Atreus on a journey. They travel to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother.
The official description of the series says: “Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human”.

What Happens Next
The search for a new Kratos has already started. There is no word yet on who will take over the role. The production team is planning to start filming again in mid-October 2026 with the new actor.
This is not the first problem the God of War series has faced. The project was first announced in 2022. In 2024, the showrunner Rafe Judkins left the project. Amazon then brought in Ronald D. Moore to take over. The show has gone through many changes over the years.
Ryan Hurst was not the first choice for many fans. When a first-look photo of Hurst as Kratos was released in February 2026, it received a lot of criticism online. Some fans did not think he was the right fit for the role. Now the show must find a new actor to bring the iconic character to life.
The show has no set release date yet. With the recasting and reshoots, it may take even longer to reach screens. But the studios are moving forward with the production as quickly as possible.
