Sugar Season 2 Episode 5 continues the intense thriller on Apple TV+. The episode, titled “Unknowns,” shows John Sugar (Colin Farrell) going to great lengths to protect Ji Moon (Raymond Lee) from the corrupt Lieutenant Ray Vega (Tony Dalton). After faking Ji’s death in the previous episode, John now works to make the lie permanent. This recap covers everything that happens in the latest episode of the neo-noir series.

The episode aired on July 17, 2026, keeping the show’s Friday release schedule. It is the fifth of eight episodes in the second season. Here is a full breakdown of the episode’s major events.

John Sugar Fakes Ji Moon’s Death Certificate

The episode opens with John Sugar finalizing his plan to save Ji Moon. After reviving Ji from a temporary overdose in Episode 4, John drives him to Open Road Recovery, a discreet rehab facility. John has used this place before for other clients and trusts their secrecy.

John then takes the next major step. He pays for a fake death certificate for Ji Moon. The certificate lists the cause of death as heart failure from a fentanyl overdose. It also states that Ji’s remains will be shipped to Korea. This detail makes the cover-up more believable. John knows that having a death certificate in public records will help convince everyone that Ji is truly gone.

John returns to the desert cabin where the fake overdose happened. He searches for any evidence he might have left behind. He finds the nasal spray he used to revive Ji hidden in a vent. He also fixes a showpiece that fell from the wall. John is very careful to remove all traces of his actions.

John Punches Vega and Maintains His Cover

John knows that Vega will be watching him closely. To sell his anger over Ji’s supposed death, John goes to Vega’s barbecue party. He storms in and punches Vega in front of witnesses. Vega tells John he expected this reaction but lets him go. The punch helps John appear genuinely upset about losing Ji.

John later visits Danny Moon (Jin Ha), Ji’s brother. He gives Danny the good news that Ji is alive and safe. Danny shows relief, but John warns him to keep the secret. John also has Val (Sasha Calle) take Ji’s friend home and tell him to pretend Ji is dead. John makes sure that only a few trusted people know the truth.

John Meets with Tom Flyberg About Vega

John visits Tom Flyberg (Shea Whigham) to discuss Vega. Tom is working on his own case and has been watching a suspect for days. John tells Tom about Vega’s crimes and asks for witness protection for Ji. Tom explains that the government won’t pay for Ji’s protection. Ji was committing a crime when he saw Vega murder someone, so his testimony is not strong enough. Tom still promises to talk to the U.S. attorneys.

Tom also points out something strange. The street price of fentanyl has dropped 90% in Vega’s area, Downer Town. Someone is buying up the market. Tom does not yet understand who is behind this or why.

John Investigates the Pavich Case

John continues working on his second case involving Senator Pavich. He breaks into the home of Dr. Stanley Ondaatje, a professor who met with Pavich. John searches Stanley’s desk and finds a drawing with circles and mathematical equations. He almost gets caught but hides when Stanley returns for his planner. After Stanley leaves, John finds a room full of succulents.

John also goes to Paramount Pictures for a backlot tour. He is a film lover and knows a lot about movies. The tour guide, Steff, recognizes him. John does this because he knows Vega’s men are watching him. He wants to appear normal and not suspicious.

Danny Gets a Boxing Contract

Danny faces consequences for his earlier fight at the Japanese restaurant. His trainer, Teddy, is angry that Danny ruined his chance with a promoter. Danny warns Teddy not to speak badly about his brother again. Later, Danny gets called back to Teddy’s office. He learns that he has not lost his opportunity. Danny signs a contract for a fight in Las Vegas.

Vega Gets the Death Certificate

While John works on his plans, Vega receives the fake death certificate for Ji Moon. He calls his unknown boss to report Ji’s death. Vega still has one of his men watch John. The report about John’s studio tour goes back to Vega. Vega does not fully trust the situation. The episode shows that Vega remains dangerous and suspicious.

The Episode Ends with John Feeling Alone

The episode ends with John returning to his hotel room. He decides not to eat dinner in the restaurant. He checks his messages but has received no replies from his fellow aliens. John leaves another message, asking anyone who stayed behind to contact him. The show continues to explore John’s loneliness and his search for belonging.
