The iconic cyborg police officer is making a comeback. Amazon MGM Studios has officially given the green light to a new RoboCop television series for Prime Video. The project has been in development since Amazon acquired MGM in 2022. This marks the first major television project for the franchise since the 2014 movie reboot.
The new series will consist of eight episodes. It comes from the production companies Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. The show will stream exclusively on Prime Video worldwide.
Showrunner and Production Team
Peter Ocko will serve as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Ocko is known for his work on Lodge 49 and Pushing Daisies. He will lead the creative direction of the series.
James Wan, the director behind The Conjuring and Aquaman, will executive produce through Blumhouse Atomic Monster. Wan expressed his excitement about the project.
“I’ve been a massive fan of RoboCop forever, so getting to help bring this world to television is a dream,” said Wan. “What Paul Verhoeven created in 1987 was decades ahead of its time, and its questions about technology, identity, and who corporations really serve have only grown more urgent.”
Other executive producers include Michael Clear and Rob Hackett from Blumhouse Atomic Monster. Ed Neumeier, who co-created and co-wrote the original 1987 film, will also serve as an executive producer. Danielle Bozzone will be the co-executive producer.
Official Story Premise
The series will follow a familiar setup. The official logline states: “A giant tech conglomerate convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force – a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer.”
This premise mirrors the original 1987 film. In that movie, Detroit police officer Alex Murphy was killed and rebuilt by Omni Consumer Products as a cyborg law enforcer. The new series will explore similar themes of corporate power and technology.
Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios, shared his thoughts on the project.
“RoboCop is a franchise that has meant something to audiences for nearly four decades — not just as an action spectacle, but as a sharp, provocative mirror of our relationship with technology and power,” said Friedlander. “Peter Ocko has crafted a vision that honors the soul of what made the original so enduring while building something entirely fresh and urgent for today.”
Cast and Release Date
No cast members have been announced yet. The series is still in the early stages of production. Fans will have to wait for updates on who will play the new RoboCop.
A release date has not been set. The show was officially greenlit this week. Production is expected to begin in 2027. More announcements about casting and filming schedules will come in the following months.
The Legacy of RoboCop
The original RoboCop film came out in 1987. Director Paul Verhoeven created a violent action movie that also served as a satire of capitalism and corporate greed. The film starred Peter Weller as Alex Murphy.
The franchise expanded over the years. Sequels included RoboCop 2 in 1990 and RoboCop 3 in 1993. A remake starring Joel Kinnaman was released in 2014. That film earned $242.6 million worldwide but did not receive a sequel.

Several television shows have also been made. There was a 12-episode animated series in 1988. A live-action series aired in 1994. Another live-action miniseries called RoboCop: Prime Directives came out in 2001. Video games and comic books have also kept the franchise alive.
The new Prime Video series will be the first RoboCop project since the 2014 film. It represents Amazon’s effort to use the MGM library of intellectual property.
