The fifth episode of Ted Lasso Season 4, titled “Riches of Embarrassment,” arrived on Apple TV+ on September 2, 2026. This episode puts relationships front and center, with Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) facing a major turning point in her romance with Matthijs (Matteo van der Grijn). The hour also covers the Lady Greyhounds’ first big FA Cup match against Chelsea and assistant coach Alice Chilton (Tanya Reynolds) cracking under pressure.
Rebecca’s Relationship Takes an Unexpected Turn
Rebecca’s long-distance relationship with Matthijs hits a rough patch in Episode 5. Matthijs shows up at her door with his daughter Jelka (Susanna Redhead), looking sharp in his uniform. He shares exciting news – he has taken a job with Virgin Atlantic and is moving to London to be with her.
But Rebecca’s face tells a different story. Instead of pure joy, she looks conflicted. Later, when she explains her mixed feelings to Ted, she even starts choking nervously – a moment that beats Higgins’ famous gagging reactions.
The next morning, Rebecca gently tells Matthijs they should have talked about this big move together. Things get worse when Jelka accidentally reveals that Matthijs is actually following his ex-wife to London, not moving specifically for Rebecca. His ex-wife got a London job first, and Matthijs decided to follow to stay close to his family.
This revelation hits Rebecca hard. She realizes she is not his top priority. When she confronts Matthijs about this, he gets angry that she discussed the matter with his daughter. He then suggests they take a break from their relationship. The couple ends the episode separated.
Keeley and Roy’s Role Reversal
Rebecca is not the only one dealing with romantic problems. Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) and Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) also switch roles in this episode.
For the first four episodes, Roy wanted to date Keeley again, and she felt he was not ready. Roy had been working through a challenge to go on ten dates before Keeley would consider getting back together.
Episode 5 gives viewers one of the best Roy-Keeley scenes of the season. Keeley finally shows she is willing to give things another try. She asks Roy what date he is on, pretending it is just curiosity. He tells her he is at number nine.
But Roy has actually started developing feelings for someone else – Erin – during his dating experiment. Keeley tries to stay strong but later breaks down crying in front of Rebecca.
Ted’s Hot Dog Moment Brings the Team Together
The episode opens with two Lady Greyhounds players, Margy El Sharif (Mercedes Assad) and Mady Song (Annelise Heywood), spotting Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) eating a hot dog alone at night. The players, who are going through a rough patch in their own relationship, find this sight deeply concerning.
They believe hot dogs are “strictly a social food” and see the empty look in Ted’s eyes. The two women take a photo and share it with the team, convincing everyone that their coach is lonely and possibly depressed. This unexpected sight actually makes Margy and Mady change their minds about breaking up – they suddenly fear ending up alone like Ted.
The next day, the players start asking Ted about his personal life, trying to cheer him up. They even buy him a new pair of jeans as a gift. Ted figures out what is happening but plays along because the attention is bringing the dressing room together.
Alice Chilton Cracks Under Pressure
Alice Chilton struggles with Ted’s growing bond with the players. She does not like him answering personal questions or accepting gifts from the women.
Alice’s discomfort turns into bad behavior. She defies Ted’s orders and pressures the team to win against Chelsea, even though they are the current Women’s Super League champions. During training, she lashes out at player Shannon and reignites her feud with Gemma (Abbie Hern).
Ted tries to help Alice using a barbecue metaphor – cooking low and slow requires patience, while constantly poking the meat only makes it tough. But Alice does not listen.
By halftime, Richmond is down 2-0. Alice calls the team’s performance embarrassing. Ted makes the difficult decision to suspend Alice for one match. He is determined not to repeat the mistake he made with Nate Shelley, letting resentment fester until it exploded.
“Ted needed to stop Alice from bullying players under the banner of demanding excellence, even though benching someone who already fears being pushed out carries its own risk.”
