How Episode 11 Moves the Story Forward
Episode 11 arrives after a major shift in focus during episode 10. The story is moving beyond the core dynamic between Sasaki and Tayama to explore the supermarket’s supporting cast. Episode 11 is titled around the Christmas season, and Sasaki runs into an unfamiliar face in the smoking area behind the supermarket during the holiday period. This continues the pattern from episode 10, where a new character named Obata was introduced as a nervous produce section chief who looks up to the store manager, Goto.
The episode is expected to bring Yamada and Sasaki back toward the center of the narrative after episode 10 gave significant screen time to Obata and Goto. The Christmas setting adds emotional weight because Sasaki has spent the series feeling isolated by his work schedule, and the holiday season highlights that loneliness in a quiet, relatable way.
Episode 10 Recap: Obata Arrives and Christmas Brings New Connections
Episode 10, titled Shining Behind the Supermarket with You, opened with Sasaki walking through Christmas-lit streets, feeling left behind by the world around him. He stumbles upon a young man named Obata in the smoking area behind the supermarket. Obata is a nervous, self-deprecating produce section chief who has just been “attacked” by Daigorou, which in reality was the store cat simply trying to get some pets.
Sasaki and Obata bond over their shared workplace stress. Obata quickly shows that he sees the good in Sasaki, making him an easy character to root for. Voice actor Rikuya Yasuda brings Obata’s nervous energy to life with small shrieks and utterances that add humor to the episode. The second half of episode 10 focused on Obata’s admiration for Goto, the store manager. He discovers her weeping and wants to help the boss he respects so much. The episode explored leadership and vulnerability, showing that Goto does not always have to lead with confidence and strength. Yamada had very little screen time in episode 10, and Sasaki did not appear in the second half at all.

What Makes This Anime Different From Other Romance Series
Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You began as a webcomic posted on X in March 2022 by Jinushi. It later serialized in Monthly Big Gangan magazine in August 2022 and won the 2022 Next Manga Award in the web category. The story follows 45-year-old office worker Sasaki, who is burnt out from his corporate job. His daily ritual involves visiting his neighborhood supermarket to buy the same dinner, snacks and beer, just so he can briefly interact with a cheerful young cashier named Yamada.
One evening, after missing Yamada at the store, a young woman named Tayama invites him to smoke behind the supermarket. Sasaki does not realize that Tayama and Yamada are the same person. The series never glorifies smoking as cool or sexy, despite the title. Instead, smoking serves as the quiet ritual that allows two people to slow down and connect.
The anime had an unusual rollout. Crunchyroll released 12 mini-episodes of the opening story arc on June 3, 2026, before the official television broadcast began on July 9, 2026. This early release helped the show build a dedicated audience before it even aired on television.
Where to Watch and What Comes Next
Episode 11 streams on Crunchyroll worldwide. The series has 12 episodes in total, with episode 12 set to release on September 24, 2026. The anime is produced with Japanese audio and offers subtitles in English, Spanish, Portuguese and other languages on Crunchyroll. The series is a co-production that airs on TBS and 27 other channels in Japan before streaming globally.
