The Table Day And Night is an upcoming Korean romance film that has already made headlines before its theatrical release. Directed by Kim Jong-kwan, the movie has been selected as the opening film of the 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). The film will have its world premiere on October 6, 2026, at the Busan Cinema Center.
The movie brings together a strong ensemble cast including Kim Min Ha, Joo Jong Hyuk, Han Sun Hwa, Chang Ryul, Shim Eun Kyung, Lee Hee Jun, Jeon So Young, and Kim Dong Hwi. After its festival debut, the film will arrive in theaters across South Korea in November 2026.
What Is The Table Day And Night About
The film tells four separate love stories that all take place in the same café located in a quiet Seoul alley. The stories unfold as summer changes into autumn, moving between daytime and nighttime hours.
Each couple experiences love at a different stage, much like the different kinds of coffee served at the café. Some stories are sweet, while others carry a bittersweet tone.
The first story follows Yoo Jin (Kim Min Ha), a woman who has a strange dream one night, and Hyeon Oh (Joo Jong Hyuk), a man who dreams of becoming a master watchmaker. They visit the same café at different times of day and their paths eventually cross.
The second story shows an unexpected reunion between Sang Mi (Han Sun Hwa) and Young Min (Chang Ryul). The two attended the same private tutoring sessions in middle school and meet again years later.
The third story features Hye Jin (Shim Eun Kyung), a web novel writer, and Dong Nam (Lee Hee Jun), an indie filmmaker. Their first meeting is described as fiery and full of creative energy.
The fourth story captures the bittersweet moments shared by Na Kyeong (Jeon So Young), an aspiring idol, and her boyfriend Jong Su (Kim Dong Hwi).
A Loose Follow-Up To Kim Jong-kwan’s 2016 Film
Director Kim Jong-kwan is known for his delicate storytelling style. His 2004 debut short film How to Operate a Polaroid Camera won the jury prize at the Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival.
He has directed segments for the Netflix anthology series Persona (2019), which featured K-pop star IU, as well as Vestige (2022) and The Killers (2024).
The Table: Day and Night is described as a loose follow-up to his 2016 feature The Table, which also took place in a single Seoul café and premiered at BIFF that year.
The Busan International Film Festival praised the film in its official announcement. The festival described it as an elegant and assured work where Kim Jong-kwan’s cinematic interests and style reach a “provisional culmination.”
“Without relying on excessive setups or dramatic turns, its greatest merit lies in how thoughtfully it captures the unique inner voices and emotions of its characters, as well as the subtle shifts in their relationships.”
