A Long-Awaited Release
The announcement has generated significant excitement among fans, particularly as Barroz represents Mohanlal’s first venture as a director. The film is based on a novel by Jijo Punnoose, who also penned the screenplay. Punnoose is a well-known name in Indian cinema, especially for his work on the pioneering 3D film My Dear Kuttichathan (Chhota Chetan). Barroz revolves around the titular character, a ghost who has been guarding the treasure of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama for over 400 years. Mohanlal himself portrays this mystical guardian, tasked with ensuring the treasure is passed on to a rightful heir.
A Stellar Cast and Global Appeal
Barroz boasts a diverse and talented cast, including actors like Guru Somasundaram, Cesar Lorente Raton, Ignacio Mateos, and Kallirroi Tziafeta. The movie, shot in 3D, is being dubbed in 16 languages, aiming to break linguistic barriers and appeal to a global audience. The film’s cinematography is helmed by acclaimed cinematographer Santosh Sivan, with the soundtrack composed by Lydian Nadhaswaran and Mark Kilian. The Portuguese influence on the story is also reflected in the music, with songs blended into the narrative to enrich the cultural context.
Challenges and Legal Controversy
The journey to the big screen hasn’t been without its hurdles. The film’s release was delayed due to extensive post-production work, including complex visual effects that are crucial to the 3D experience. Additionally, earlier this year, Mohanlal and the production team faced legal challenges when a German-based Malayali writer accused them of copyright infringement. Despite the legal notice, the team has remained tight-lipped about the allegations, neither confirming nor denying the claims publicly.
Production Details of Barroz
Produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas, Barroz is expected to be a significant milestone in Mohanlal’s illustrious career. The film’s setting spans across Portugal and India, with the production team putting immense effort into ensuring cultural authenticity and historical accuracy. As Mohanlal steps behind the camera for the first time, all eyes are on whether his directorial debut will match his legendary status as an actor.
With the release scheduled for early October, just as the festive season begins, Barroz is poised to be a major attraction at the box office. Fans and cinephiles alike are eagerly awaiting to see how Mohanlal’s vision translates onto the screen, especially given the film’s unique premise and the extensive effort invested in its production.
