The latest season of Peacemaker on HBO Max concluded with a dramatic twist that sets the stage for a deeply personal new enemy for John Cena’s Christopher Smith. In the penultimate episode, a violent confrontation with his alternate universe family results in the birth of a new DCU supervillain, a transformation that series creator James Gunn has confirmed was the core origin story of the entire season.

The Birth of Captain Triumph

In Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 7, titled “Like a Keith in the Night,” Chris Smith’s journey to an alternate Earth, known as Earth-X, reaches a violent climax. This world, where the Nazis won World War II, is home to alternate versions of his deceased brother and father, Keith and Auggie Smith. The situation explodes when Vigilante, thinking he is saving the day, kills the Earth-X Auggie Smith. This act sends Keith, who already learned that the main Earth’s Chris was responsible for his own double’s death, into a vengeful rage.

Keith, who operates as the superhero Captain Triumph on his Earth, is brutally beaten by Chris’s team but is ultimately left alive. This decision not to kill him is the final catalyst for his transformation. James Gunn explained on the official Peacemaker podcast that this entire season was designed to be this character’s origin story.

“In one way, the whole season is Captain Triumph’s origin as a super villain, a white supremacist piece of s— super villain,” Gunn stated. “And at the end, we see that look in his eye, and we’re like, ‘Oh.’”

This new villain is uniquely tied to Peacemaker’s own history. Gunn noted the strange dynamic, calling him “your brother from another dimension who hates you because you killed yourself.”

A Different Version of a Father

The Earth-X version of Auggie Smith, also played by Robert Patrick, was a crucial element in this transformation. Unlike the main DC Universe’s Auggie, who was a violent white supremacist and abusive father, the Earth-X Auggie showed “real compassion”. In the episode, he learns that the main Chris killed his son but understands that his own son was “not a good human being.” He sees that the Chris from our world is a better person and decides to help him and his friends escape.

“He can see that the Chris from our planet is a good person, and he wants to save them,” Gunn explained on the podcast. This moment of potential connection and understanding for Chris is shattered when Vigilante, unaware of the context, kills Auggie, radicalizing Keith further.

A Changed Ending and a Cycle of Violence

The episode nearly ended very differently. In the original script, the character of Emilia Harcourt does execute Keith on the floor. Jennifer Holland, who plays Harcourt, described the weight of that moment, seeing it as Harcourt being willing to sacrifice Chris’s love for her to protect him from a future threat.

However, the decision to let Keith live fundamentally changes the story’s direction. It creates a parallel between Keith’s origin as a villain and Peacemaker’s own origin as a hero. Both characters are set on their paths by the traumatic death of a brother and a father. As Gunn and the cast discussed, leaving Keith alive breaks the cycle of violence in one moment but potentially starts a new, more dangerous one, establishing Peacemaker’s new “arch-enemy.”

Connections to a Larger DC Universe

The events of the season finale also weave the story into the broader fabric of the DCU. The episode ends with Chris Smith turning himself over to A.R.G.U.S. authorities, led by Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo. Crucially, Chris hands over the dimensional portal device, a powerful piece of technology.

This device is later shown to become part of a deal between Rick Flag Sr. and Lex Luthor, who appears at Belle Reve prison. This connection signals that the consequences of Peacemaker’s actions and the threat of Captain Triumph are not confined to his own series but will likely have repercussions elsewhere in the expanding DC Universe.
