The new film Predator: Badlands is taking the franchise in a bold new direction, and director Dan Trachtenberg recently shared how legendary filmmaker James Cameron provided crucial support during its creation. In a surprising twist, Cameron’s encouragement came with a hidden layer, and his influence on the Predator universe spans back to the very beginning, helping create the monster’s iconic look.

The Honest Feedback Behind the Encouragement

While filming Predator: Badlands in New Zealand, Dan Trachtenberg had dinner with James Cameron, who was nearby working on his Avatar sequel. Trachtenberg shared his ambitious vision for the new film, which centers entirely on a young Predator named Dek. Cameron’s initial response was overwhelmingly positive.

โ€œI was just thinking about what youโ€™re doing, and I think itโ€™s going to work,โ€ Cameron told Trachtenberg at the time.

That vote of confidence was a major boost for Trachtenberg. However, the truth behind Cameron’s support was revealed months later. After Trachtenberg showed Cameron a rough cut of the film, the Avatar director came clean with his original doubts. He admitted that when he first heard the concept of a Predator-led story, “I did not think it was going to work.” But after seeing the nearly finished movie, his reaction was, โ€œBut holy crap, you pulled it off.โ€ Trachtenberg believes Cameron’s initial encouragement was a strategic move, knowing exactly what a fellow director needed to hear to push through a challenging project.

The Mandibles That Defined a Monster

James Cameron’s impact on the Predator franchise is not new. His most famous contribution dates back to the original 1987 film, when he helped design the creature’s unforgettable face. During the film’s production, the original design for the Predator was not working, and production was halted. Special effects legend Stan Winston was brought in to redesign the monster with a very tight deadline.

While Winston was sketching concepts on a plane ride with Cameron, the Aliens director offered a simple but transformative suggestion.

โ€œYou know, I always wanted to see something with mandibles,โ€ Cameron said to Winston.

Winston immediately incorporated the idea into his drawings. This led to the creation of the Predator’s signature spider-like mouth, a feature that has become a core part of the creature’s menacing appearance in every subsequent film. This collaboration between Cameron and Winston helped create one of science fiction’s most iconic movie monsters.

A New Frontier for the Predator Franchise

Predator: Badlands, released in theaters on November 7, 2025, represents a radical shift for the series. It is the first film to feature a Predator as the main protagonist. The story follows a young Yautja named Dek on a dangerous planet. He forms an unlikely alliance with a synthetic android named Thia, played by Elle Fanning. The film has been noted for its PG-13 rating, a first for the mainline Predator series, and for its deeper exploration of Predator culture and language.

The connection to the broader sci-fi universe is also strengthened through the inclusion of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, the iconic conglomerate from the Alien franchise that Cameron fully introduced in his 1986 film Aliens.

Dan Trachtenberg has now directed three acclaimed projects in the Predator franchise, beginning with the 2022 hit Prey and followed by the animated Predator: Killer of Killers earlier this year. His successful work has re-invigorated the franchise, proving that even decades-old series can find exciting new directions with a fresh vision and a little encouragement from a sci-fi master.
