A new generation of Slayers is preparing to battle the forces of evil, and they won’t be fighting alone. Sarah Michelle Gellar is officially returning as the iconic Buffy Summers in a new Hulu series, which director Chloé Zhao has confirmed is a direct sequel to the original show, not a reboot. The project, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, will introduce a new Slayer while bringing back original characters to bridge the story between two generations of fans.

The Director’s Clear Vision: A Sequel, Not a Reboot

There will be no recasting of the beloved Scooby Gang. Director and executive producer Chloé Zhao, an Academy Award winner, has put any speculation to rest, making it clear that this new series is a continuation of the story that ended in 2003.

“It is not a reboot. It’s a sequel. You can never replace these characters. I would never allow that,” Zhao stated.

Her vision for the show is to create a bridge between the original audience and a new generation. The series is designed to honor the existing fandom while also welcoming viewers who may be new to the Buffy universe. Zhao emphasized that the show is “very much about both generations.”

Passing the Torch to a New Slayer

While Sarah Michelle Gellar is reprising her legendary role, the series will also introduce a new protagonist. Ryan Kiera Armstrong has been cast as a new Slayer named Nova. Armstrong is known for her role in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and the film Firestarter.

In this new story, Gellar’s Buffy Summers is expected to take on a role similar to that of a Watcher, guiding and training the next generation. Gellar has spoken about her instant connection with Armstrong, stating that from the moment she saw her audition, she knew Armstrong was the only actor she wanted by her side for this new chapter.

The new cast also includes Faly Rakotohavana as Hugo, Ava Jean as Larkin, and Sarah Bock as Gracie. They will be joined by Jack Cutmore-Scott as Mr. Burke, Kingston Vernes as Carson, and Chase Sui Wonders, who will appear as a vampire named Shirley in the pilot episode.

More Original Characters Are Set to Return

Fans can look forward to more familiar faces returning to Sunnydale. Zhao has confirmed that the plan is to bring back other original “OG” characters, though specific names have not been officially announced. This opens the door for the return of characters like Willow, Giles, and others, potentially including those who have passed away, given the show’s history with supernatural resurrections.

Several original cast members have shown public support for the new series. Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase) expressed her excitement, writing, “Long live the slayer, long live the slayer in us all!” Juliet Landau (Drusilla) also shared her enthusiasm, saying she would “absolutely” love to return to her role.

A Project Driven by Passion for the Original

The decision to create a sequel series was born from a shared love for the original show. Chloé Zhao is a self-professed superfan who has vivid memories of watching the series finale in college.

“I remember the last episode finishing, and we sat there; everyone was crying, and we were all holding hands. I remember looking at the screen, tears streaming down my eyes, and I said, ‘Good luck to you, Buffy Summers, good luck to you,’” Zhao recalled. She added that meeting Sarah Michelle Gellar in person was “one of the most stressful moments of my life.”

This personal connection was a key factor in convincing Sarah Michelle Gellar to return after more than two decades. Gellar had always been hesitant about reviving the series, but a four-hour meeting with Zhao changed her mind. Gellar was moved by Zhao’s passion and her compelling idea for a new story, ultimately agreeing that a hero like Buffy is needed now more than ever in today’s world.

Current Status and Release Plans

Production on the pilot episode is complete, and the team is now in the editing phase. The series is currently awaiting a full series order from Hulu. If all moves forward as planned, reports indicate that fans can expect the show to premiere on Hulu in 2026.

Gellar has been clear that the team will only proceed if they can honor the original series correctly. She has promised that the new show will be filled with Easter eggs for long-time fans but will also be structured in a way that new viewers who have never seen the original can jump in and enjoy the story.
