The peaceful coastal town of Gibsons is about to get busy again. The second season of the Fox crime drama Murder in a Small Town brings back its beloved central duo while introducing a host of new characters. With an expanded police jurisdiction and new political challenges, the upcoming season promises more mystery and deeper personal stories for its residents.

Season 2 sees Karl Alberg’s responsibilities grow, forcing him and his small team to handle a larger caseload with limited resources. Meanwhile, Cassandra Lee settles into her new role on the town council, finding herself at odds with a powerful new political figure. The new season adds acclaimed award-winning actors to the cast and welcomes back familiar faces from the first season.

The Returning Core Cast

The heart of the show remains the partnership between Police Chief Karl Alberg and librarian Cassandra Lee, both of whom are back for the new season.

Rossif Sutherland returns as Karl Alberg, the sharp detective who left Minneapolis for a quieter life in Gibsons. The new season tests his skills as his jurisdiction expands, putting pressure on his small department and its limited budget. Sutherland is known for his roles in The Handmaid’s Tale and Reign.

Kristin Kreuk reprises her role as Cassandra “Cass” Lee, the town librarian and Karl’s intellectual equal. Now a elected member of the town council, she fights for a library expansion, a move that brings her into direct conflict with the new mayor. Kreuk is widely recognized for playing Lana Lang in Smallville.

Several key supporting cast members are also back. Aaron Douglas returns as Sergeant Sid Sokolowski, Karl’s reliable right-hand man on the police force. This season, he grapples with his daughter’s struggle with drug addiction. Savonna Spracklin is back as dispatcher Isabella Harbud, the steady presence at the Gibsons police department. Karl’s family also plays a role, with Dakota Guppy returning as his younger daughter, Holly Alberg, and Cassandra Sawtell joining the cast as his older daughter, Steph Alberg, who comes to Gibsons to recover from a bad breakup.

New Series Regulars Shake Up Gibsons

Season 2 introduces several new characters who become central to the story, creating new dynamics and conflicts.

Academy Award-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden joins the cast as Mayor Christie Holman, a practicing doctor and beloved political figure. Described as having a “poisonously sweet” charm, she quickly becomes a nemesis for Cassandra. Mayor Holman attempts to pressure Karl by holding the police budget hostage, all to get Cass to drop her push for the library expansion.

Another significant addition is Bethany Brown as Corporal Laila Jackson, a new police officer on the force. She is a guarded and determined cop with a past connection to Karl from their time in Minneapolis. Brown’s character is a recovering alcoholic, and the stress of the understaffed department threatens her sobriety.

Marci T. House joins the cast as Angela Clyburn, the new medical examiner. She is a relentlessly detailed and capable professional who knows Karl by reputation but has never worked with him before. Her character is a newly single mother with a 19-year-old son.

Joshua Close plays Todd, an un-housed man who is an avid reader and spends much of his time at the local library. Though his appearance can seem intimidating, he is not as scary as he looks. He becomes connected to a violent crime after a confrontation in town leads to police involvement.

A Lineup of Notable Guest Stars

The new season features an impressive roster of guest stars who will appear in key episodic roles.

  • Camryn Manheim plays Jocelyn Tait, an iron-tough, working-class matriarch who has lived her life in the shadow of a family feud. She arrives in Gibsons for a “Romeo and Juliet-style” wedding where a body is discovered.
  • Tyler Posey appears as Ryan, a former party boy who has reinvented himself as a holistic health enthusiast. He is desperate to leave his reckless past behind.
  • Jamie Chung portrays Lanni Soo, a career-driven and straightforward Deputy Prosecuting Attorney General. She approaches Karl with an intriguing case that pulls him into a new investigation.
  • Sara Canning plays Mackenzie Rankin, a woman who organizes a memorial gathering after the death of her younger sister, a death that becomes a key case for the police.
  • Noah Reid reprises his role from Season 1 as Tommy Cummins, the unassuming high school art teacher whose secret life as a serial killer was uncovered and who is now behind bars.

What to Expect in the New Season

The second season premiered on September 23, 2025, on Fox. With Karl’s wider jurisdiction, the show explores crimes beyond the immediate town of Gibsons. The cases investigated in the new season include a body found at a wedding between two feuding families, a double kidnapping that may hide a larger crime, and a pop star on a quiet vacation who is followed by a dangerous stalker.

The relationship between Karl and Cassandra continues to evolve. They are more committed but now face professional conflicts as Cass’s political career puts her at odds with Karl’s police work. Executive producer Jeff Wachtel teased a season-long mystery, stating:

“There is going to be a little bit of a, ‘Wait, this one and this one, which are unsolved over the last 10 years, kind of tie together,’ and it’s a bit of a surprise who the baddie is.”

The season is currently filming in British Columbia, with episodes directed by Amanda Tapping and Tracey Deer, among others.
