The mystery of Tall Pines might not be over. Toni Collette has shared a promising update about the potential for a second season of Netflix’s thriller series Wayward. The actress, who plays the chilling academy leader Evelyn Wade, confirmed she is fully ready to return and has already brainstormed new storylines with the show’s creator.
Toni Collette’s Strong Season 2 Support
In a recent interview, Collette was direct when asked if she would reprise her role as the seemingly warm but secretly ruthless head of the fictional Tall Pines Academy.
โHell yeah. We had the best time. Are you kidding? And I love Mae [Martin],โ Collette said. She also revealed that she and Martin, the creator of the Netflix series, have already discussed possible directions for a continuation. โWeโve talked about potential storylines, but I thought it had been buried. Maybe there is some hope. I donโt know. I would totally do it,โ the actress added.
This news is particularly significant because Wayward was initially developed and released as a limited series. Collette’s comments suggest conversations about continuing the story are happening behind the scenes, moving beyond just fan wishful thinking.
What Is Netflix’s Wayward About?
For those who haven’t visited its eerie streets, Wayward is a Canadian mystery thriller that premiered on Netflix on September 25, 2025. The eight-episode series is set in 2003 in the fictional town of Tall Pines, Vermont.
The story centers on two best friends, Abbie (Sydney Topliffe) and Leila (Alyvia Alyn Lind), who are sent to the secluded Tall Pines Academy, a school for “troubled teens”. Their attempts to escape the academy’s oppressive rules bring them into contact with Alex Dempsey (played by show creator Mae Martin), a new police officer in town who has just moved there with his pregnant wife, Laura (Sarah Gadon). Together, they begin to uncover the town’s deeply hidden and disturbing secrets.
At the center of it all is Toni Collette’s Evelyn. Described as the town’s warm, maternal, and pragmatic leader, Evelyn expertly uses empathy to manipulate people and will do anything to protect the sinister system she has built at Tall Pines Academy.
The Cast and Creator Are Ready for More
Collette is not the only one eager to go back to the unsettling world of the show. Creator and star Mae Martin has also spoken about the potential for more story.
โI was told it was a miniseries, but thereโs definitely more story to tell, I think. We left all those characters in crisis, basically,โ Martin said in a previous interview.
The young stars of the series have echoed this sentiment. Sydney Topliffe, who plays Abbie, stated, โI would love to come backโ. Her on-screen best friend, Alyvia Alyn Lind (Leila), has publicly encouraged Martin to continue, saying, โMae, if youโre listening, weโre here. Weโre readyโ.
