The stakes have never been higher for the officers of the LAPD. A new trailer for The Rookie Season 8 shows John Nolan and his wife Bailey leaving Los Angeles for an international mission in Prague, while back home, Tim Bradford’s attempt to fix his relationship with Lucy Chen hits a major roadblock.

The season will premiere on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at 10/9c on ABC. New episodes will be available to stream the next day on Hulu.

An International Mission Takes Center Stage

For its eighth season, The Rookie is doing something it has never done before. The action is moving beyond the streets of Los Angeles to Europe. The premiere episode, titled “Czech Mate,” will follow John Nolan, his wife Bailey Nune, and Detective Nyla Harper as they travel to Prague, Czech Republic. They are teaming up with the FBI, Interpol, and the untrustworthy lawyer Monica Stevens to target a global weapons trafficking network.

Show creator Alexi Hawley explained the decision to take the show abroad was about finding new and exciting territory for the stories. Prague was chosen for its cinematic look, which is very different from the usual Los Angeles setting.

“Once I was like, ‘I want to go somewhere for the premiere,’ it became a conversation about whereโ€ฆ Prague immediately jumped out as such a cinematic city,” Hawley told TV Guide.

While Nolan, Bailey, and Harper are overseas, the rest of the team remains in Los Angeles to handle the local side of the same dangerous operation.

Chenford Faces a Painful Conversation

The trailer reveals that the personal lives of the officers are just as tense as their work. A major focus is on the complicated relationship between sergeants Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen, known to fans as “Chenford”.

In the Season 7 finale, Tim tried to ask Lucy to move in with him, but she fell asleep before he could finish. The new season will see him try again, but Lucy’s response is not what he hoped for. In a powerful moment from the trailer, Lucy tells Tim, “You broke my heart. The scar is so deep it might never fade”.

This suggests that despite their professional successes, the deep hurt from their past breakup is still affecting their chance at a future together. Actor Eric Winter, who plays Tim, shared that his character is trying to make up for lost time.

“I think Tim has realized over the season what he gave up and that he’s trying to be a better person, and feels like they lost out on and missed a lot of time together,” Winter said.

New Challenges for the Whole Team

The international plot is not the only major storyline. The trailer teases several other challenges for the Mid-Wilshire division:

  • Bailey’s Job Offer: Bailey receives a tempting job offer in Washington, D.C., which could force Nolan to consider a career-changing move.
  • Wesley’s Political Campaign: With Wesley Evers running to become the new District Attorney, he and his wife Angela Lopez will have to navigate the pressures of a very public life.
  • Undercover Operations: Lucy Chen and Nyla Harper are shown working a dangerous undercover assignment together, which appears to bring them into conflict with a cartel.
  • Familiar Villains Return: Along with Monica Stevens, the notorious Oscar Hutchinson is also confirmed to be back, ensuring that past conflicts are not fully resolved.

The Cast Returning for Duty

The main cast from the previous season is returning for Season 8. Actor Deric Augustine, who plays rookie officer Miles Penn, has been promoted to a series regular after appearing in a recurring role.

  • Nathan Fillion as John Nolan
  • Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper
  • Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez
  • Richard T. Jones as Wade Grey
  • Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen
  • Eric Winter as Tim Bradford
  • Jenna Dewan as Bailey Nune

Fans on social media have reacted with great excitement to the trailer. One fan on Instagram called it “pure CINEMA,” while another wrote they had watched it on repeat, excited for the new storylines.
