Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin Henderson in Stranger Things, has directly addressed growing fan anxiety about the series’ conclusion, warning viewers to emotionally prepare for a “bittersweet” ending when the final episode premieres on December 31, 2025. His comments, coupled with ominous teases from the show’s creators and a newly released trailer, suggest that not all of Hawkins’ heroes will survive the final battle against Vecna.
The farewell to the global phenomenon begins with Volume 2 of Season 5, featuring three episodes, arriving on Netflix on December 25. It will culminate in a supersized series finale on New Year’s Eve, which will also be screened in select theaters across the United States and Canada.
Emotional Warnings from the Cast
In a recent interview, Matarazzo offered no false reassurance to fans concerned about their favorite characters’ fates. “I understand the anxiety. I hear you,” he stated. “We’re all here for all that support for whatever happens. If your favorite is no longer with us or not, who knows? I don’t really have any words of comfort”.
His practical advice for viewers was to assemble a support system: “To do the most prep you can: Get some tissues, get some ice cream, get some friends, and some family”. Matarazzo also noted that he has seen some specific fan theories about the ending and found them to be “shockingly adjacent” to the actual story, further heightening anticipation.
Co-star Joe Keery, who plays the beloved Steve Harrington, spoke about the intense tone of the final season during a recent cast event. He described the experience as “new territory,” with the stakes feeling incredibly high from the beginning. “It was really ratcheted up right from the start of the seasonโฆ It was a constant reminder of what we were doing, because the show means a lot to all of us and we wanted to send these characters off well”.
Ominous Signs for Fan-Favorite Characters
Speculation about potential character deaths has intensified, particularly surrounding the fan-favorite duo of Steve and Dustin. The trailer for Volume 2 features the pair repeating a grave vow first made in Season 3: “If you die, I die”. What was once a dramatic declaration of loyalty now carries a heavy, foreboding weight as the two venture into a vine-covered Hawkins Lab within the Upside Down.
“This whole time, everything we have ever assumed about the Upside Down has been dead wrong,” Dustin declares in the trailer, as he and Steve gaze upon a terrifying, swirling mass of red and black energy.
Furthermore, creators Matt and Ross Duffer sparked widespread concern during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. While discussing the finale, they lined up Funko Pop figures of the characters and casually knocked the Steve figurine off the edge of the desk. Fans interpreted this act as a not-so-subtle hint about Steve’s precarious fate, especially given that the character was originally intended to die in the show’s first season.

The Final Episodes: A Massive Sendoff
The series will conclude with an epic farewell. Netflix has officially revealed that the final episode, simply titled “The Finale,” will have a runtime of 2 hours and 5 minutes. In an unprecedented move, this finale episode will have a dual release: it will premiere globally on Netflix at 5 p.m. PT on December 31 and simultaneously debut in limited fan screenings in over 500 theaters across the United States and Canada.
The story entering these final hours finds the town of Hawkins under military quarantine and Eleven in hiding from the government. Vecna has vanished, his plans unknown, while the anniversary of Will Byers’ original disappearance approaches, bringing with it a “heavy, familiar dread”. Will, played by Noah Schnapp, is now grappling with newly manifested supernatural powers, which the actor described as a fun challenge with “no rules” to follow.
Other major threads include Eleven’s reunion with her sister, Kali, whom she asks for help in finding and killing Vecna, and the uncertain fate of Max Mayfield, who remains in a coma after her Season 4 encounter with the villain.
A Balancing Act for the Conclusion
At a recent Paley Center event in New York celebrating the final season, Matt Duffer explained the creative challenge of ending the series. “At the end of the day, what people care about are the characters. Ross and I also love monsters and action. You do try to do both,” he said. He referenced the acclaimed Season 4 episode “Dear Billy” as the sweet spot, where a visual effects spectacle crescendos simultaneously with a character’s emotional climax.
This balance between humanity and horror appears central to the finale’s aim. As the official synopsis states, “The final battle is looming โ and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything theyโve faced before. To end this nightmare, theyโll need everyone โ the full party โ standing together, one last time”.
With the final chapters set to arrive on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, the stage is set for an emotional and potentially devastating conclusion to the nearly decade-long story that has defined a generation of television.
