The future of the Stark family in Westeros remains a topic of intense fan interest. Sophie Turner, who brought Sansa Stark to life for eight seasons on Game of Thrones, recently shared her complex thoughts on potentially picking up the crown again. In a new interview, the actress described the idea of returning as both a major challenge and a thrilling opportunity, putting the final decision squarely on the quality of a future story.
Her comments arrive as the world of Westeros expands. While shows like House of the Dragon explore the past, the creator of the series, George R. R. Martin, has confirmed that several sequel ideas set after the original series are also in development. This has sparked constant speculation about which beloved characters, if any, might return for a new chapter.
Turner’s Cautious Stance on Revisiting the Queen of the North
When asked directly about her interest in appearing in a potential sequel, Turner gave a layered response that mixed humor with genuine reflection.
โShow me the money (laughs). I don’t know, I think it would be hard but also amazing to come back to it,โ Turner told The Direct.
She explained that the experience could go one of two ways. It might be a wonderful reunion, or it could feel like an attempt to recapture a special moment in time that has passed. For Turner, the most important factor would be the story itself. โI would have to see a script,โ she stated, making clear that any return would depend on strong, purposeful writing.
This careful approach is partly because Turner feels her characterโs journey reached a natural and satisfying endpoint. In the series finale, Sansa Stark was crowned the independent Queen in the North, a conclusion that completed her long evolution from a naive young girl into a shrewd and resilient leader.
Why Sansa’s Ending Makes a Return Complicated
A key reason for Turner’s hesitation is her unique perspective on the show’s controversial finale. While the ending of Game of Thrones was heavily debated by fans and some of her fellow cast members, Turner herself was pleased with where Sansa ended up.
โI feel that I was very happy with the way Sansa ended her story in โGame of Thrones,โ and no one else was really happy with their ending. I feel like I got a good one, and so I don’t know if I could revisit it,โ she said.
This sentiment marks a shift from her immediate feelings after the show ended. In 2019, shortly after the series finale, Turner was more definitive about closing the book on Sansa. She told The Hollywood Reporter that it was “time to say goodbye” and that she was “pretty sure” she would decline any offer to return, believing her character had reached her peak. Her latest comments show a more open, though still guarded, mindset years later.
The Expanding World of Westeros and Future Sequels
The possibility of a sequel is not just fan speculation. George R. R. Martin has publicly stated that HBO is developing multiple projects set in the world of Game of Thrones. While most are prequels like the currently airing House of the Dragon, Martin confirmed that โthere are some sequelsโ also in the early stages of development. HBO has not announced any specific sequel project centered on Sansa Stark.
The network has previously explored a direct follow-up. A proposed sequel series focusing on Kit Harington’s Jon Snow character was in development but was ultimately shelved. However, HBO’s leadership has suggested the idea is not completely dead, with one executive noting, โMaybe we’ll try againโ. This indicates that the door to stories set after the original series remains open.

Other potential sequel avenues that have been discussed by fans and analysts include following Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark on her voyages west of Westeros, or jumping far into the future where the events of the original series have become legend. These concepts might not involve Sansa directly, leaving her story concluded in the North.
For fans eager to see more of Westeros, the immediate future lies in the past. House of the Dragon continues to explore the Targaryen civil war, and a new prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is also on the way. These projects ensure that the world created by George R. R. Martin will continue to grow, with or without the characters from the original series.
