The final episodes of Bridgerton Season 4, which dropped on Netflix on February 26, 2026, delivered one of the most emotional gut punches in the show’s history. Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Dodd, lost her husband John Stirling (Victor Alli) in a sudden death that left viewers reaching for tissues. But the heartbreak didn’t stop there. Just when Francesca thought she found comfort in John’s cousin Michaela (Masali Baduza), Michaela vanished without a word, leaving Francesca confused and alone .
Fans of Julia Quinn’s book series knew John’s fate was sealed. In the sixth Bridgerton novel, When He Was Wicked, John dies about two years into his marriage to Francesca, paving the way for her eventual romance with his cousin Michael. But the Netflix adaptation threw a major curveball by gender-swapping Michael into Michaela, setting up the show’s first central Sapphic romance.
So why did Michaela really leave? The answer lies in a complicated mix of grief, guilt, and feelings she simply couldn’t face.
The Loss That Changed Everything
John Stirling’s death comes quietly in episode seven. After suffering headaches throughout the season, he lies down for a nap and never wakes up. The show handles his passing with notable restraint โ viewers never see his body, only the devastating aftermath through Francesca’s eyes .
Showrunner Jess Brownell explained the creative choice to Forbes, saying the team was “really mindful of being respectful to the character” and wanted to give proper attention to the grief that followed .
For Francesca, the loss is crushing. She throws herself into planning John’s memorial and handling his estate, trying desperately to maintain her calm facade. She also holds onto hope that she might be pregnant with John’s child โ something that would give her a piece of him to carry forward. But an invasive medical exam reveals she is not pregnant, triggering a raw emotional breakdown in her mother Violet’s arms .
“I think it’s pretty dark,” Dodd told Netflix Tudum about the pregnancy storyline. “The idea of the pregnancy gives Francesca something to hold onto, which is so devastating” .
Michaela Becomes Francesca’s Rock
Enter Michaela Stirling. John’s cousin returns to Mayfair in the second half of Season 4, and despite their initially rocky relationship โ the two rubbed each other the wrong way when they first met in Season 3 โ they gradually form a bond over their shared love for John .
For Francesca, Michaela becomes the only person who truly understands what she’s going through. Both women loved John deeply, and their grief creates a connection that Francesca clings to desperately. She asks Michaela to stay with her in London rather than return to Scotland, and Michaela agrees .
But something else is brewing beneath the surface.
Masali Baduza, who plays Michaela, told ABC Audio that developing the friendship between the two women was “so much fun” to film. “I think Michaela and Francesca bring out sides to them that they’re maybe not used to having to confront,” she explained .
However, Baduza also confirmed what many sharp-eyed viewers suspected: Michaela’s feelings for Francesca run deeper than friendship.
“I think Michaela has feelings for Francesca,” Baduza told Variety. “I think that she has pushed them down to the very bottom, but they are there, and she isn’t really acknowledging them. Obviously, Francesca is her cousin’s wife, so it’s a lot for her, but she’s definitely feeling that level of attraction for Francesca” .
The Sudden Departure
In the season’s final episode, Francesca wakes up to discover Michaela is gone. A servant delivers the cold news: “Did Miss Stirling not inform you? She has packed her belongings and left” . Francesca looks utterly heartbroken, betrayed by the one person who seemed to understand her pain.
But Michaela’s exit wasn’t cruelty โ it was self-preservation mixed with overwhelming guilt.
Baduza explained her character’s mindset to Variety: “Michaela’s feeling a lot of emotions, and she’s very overwhelmed. I think that her coping mechanism is to just run away and pretend like nothing is happening. If she’s not there to face it, then she doesn’t have to deal with it” .
The actor expanded on this during her ABC Audio interview, noting that running is “what she does best.” Michaela “just runs away from her issues,” Baduza said, and in the future, “she’s going to have to deal with all of that fallout” .
The guilt angle is crucial. In the books, Michael Stirling struggles with feeling like he’s coveting what his cousin had โ first the Kilmartin estate, which passes to him since John had no heirs, and then Francesca herself. The show adapts this conflict for Michaela, who must grapple with attraction to her cousin’s widow while still grieving John .
One pivotal moment pushes Michaela over the edge. After a celebration of John’s life that Michaela organizes, Francesca thanks her and holds her hand. The intimacy of the moment makes Michaela realize her feelings are only deepening. Staying would mean confronting desires that feel wrong and disrespectful to John’s memory. So she does exactly what Michael does in the books โ she flees, hoping distance will extinguish her feelings .
Francesca’s Confusion
For Francesca, Michaela’s departure is confusing on multiple levels. She doesn’t understand why her friend would abandon her after promising to stay. But she also doesn’t recognize her own complicated feelings toward Michaela.
Dodd explained Francesca’s state of mind to Variety: “I think Francesca isn’t even aware of that as a possibility. As much as she’s feeling feelings, she doesn’t really know where they come from and why” .
Francesca has never considered the possibility of loving a woman. Her attraction to Michaela manifests as confusion and irritation โ Michaela’s outgoing, impulsive nature clashes with Francesca’s need for order, creating tension that Francesca misreads as simple dislike.
“There’s a response that comes from Francesca when she’s with Michaela, but I don’t think she has any idea what that is โ yet,” Dodd added .
What the Cast and Creators Say
The gender-swap of Michael to Michaela was no random decision. Brownell revealed she had been pitching the idea since Season 1 and received author Julia Quinn’s blessing before moving forward .
“The fact of the matter is, the fan base is not a monolith, and you’re never going to please every single side of the fan base,” Brownell told Teen Vogue in June 2024. “In, for example, deciding to tell a queer story with Francesca, I spoke with Julia Quinn, I got her blessing” .
The cast is fully on board with where the story is heading. Dodd told Variety that she and Baduza are “mainly really, really excited and very proud to get to tell that story, and tell it in a way that it’s the lead storyline and not just the side characters” .
Victor Alli, who played John, sees his character as the permanent link between Francesca and Michaela. “I think there will always be a part of John in Francesca and Michaela, because ultimately, he’s the thing that united them both,” he told Variety. “Of course, they have to find their own feet and their own journey together. But he’s the glue”.

What’s Next for Francesca and Michaela
Netflix has not officially announced the Season 5 lead, though Brownell has confirmed that Francesca and Eloise’s stories are next in line . Given the extensive setup in Season 4 โ John’s death, Michaela’s departure, and the clear romantic tension โ Francesca seems the likely frontrunner.
Baduza hopes Michaela will return to make things right. “I hope that Michaela comes back to apologize, sets the record straight with Francesca and explains why she did what she did. It would be lovely to see that. I hope so. Fingers crossed,” she told Variety .
Dodd acknowledged that reconciliation won’t be easy. “It is gonna take some work, definitely. They’re both in pain, so I do hope that there’s grace given to both of them” .
The show also has Francesca’s fertility journey to address. In the books, her struggle with infertility and desire for a child is a major plot point. While Season 4 cut a miscarriage storyline from the source material โ Brownell told Swooon it would have made the season “too morbid” โ the showrunner confirmed they’re “still very interested in honouring the fertility storyline” in Francesca’s future season .
For now, fans are left with a grieving Francesca, a guilt-ridden Michaela fleeing in a carriage, and the promise that these two women are far from finished with each other. As Alli put it, John is “the glue” . And glue, once dried, is very hard to break.
